Dialer Program

I have some sort of dialer program that keeps popping back onto my computer. I run Mcafee and it finds it and deletes it, but if I restart my computer it is back again. Is there another program on my computer that is reloading this dialer back in at start up?

Isn't there a way to check your start up file? Using XP professional.

Re: Dialer Program

You should download Spybot, and Adaware, and run them both. One or both will find the problem and eradicate it.

BTW, who is your dialer calling?

Another free program I use is Windows Startup Inspector.
It shows everything that starts at boot-up, and allows you to turn off/on at will. Got it at majorgeeks.com.

Re: Dialer Program

I've got all the spyware stuff and it runs and deletes everything, but I think this one is maybe pretty sneaky and hides itself somehow and rebuilds on reboot.

It can't call anybody because I don't have a modem, but it sure is trying!

Hey, thanks guys, it seems to have been eliminated finally, persistant little bugger. Spybot ran at boot up for some reason and that seemed to have gotten rid of it, maybe before it had a chance to do it's little hide and dance number.

Re: Dialer Program

Often times when you use a type of automated removal tool it does not go in and clean all the bad bits in your registry. This is what causes the bad program to restart again even though the automatic program has claimed to remove it.

If you can identify the actual name of the culprit, virus, trojan etc then it's fairly easy to do a search for it on google and get detailed step by step instructions on how to remove the registry entries manually - which is often the only true way of eliminating them completely.
