Comcast ???

I start having slowdowns on my email and then posting slow on CT. Slow/slow loads. This is after a finding out I have a blazing fast internet speed just a week before. 29000 kps or something
Call Comcast and its the old unplug this and that for 2 hrs. So they get me up and running with a ethernet cord to a modem. Works great, but now I got no wireless on my 5 computers. They all worked wireless, now none do,
4 windows units and 1 Mac. Just had to vent!

I just got done getting the Mac working, 3 computers to go. Comcast offered to do my wireless for $150.
Makes me kinda suspicious.

LOL I gonna have to call Comcast in the morning and complain about this.

Maybe I can get a credit for such awful speeds.

So far so good had it switched over a few weeks ago.

I have business service at the home office.

Internet, Cable, 2 phone lines, static ip, outlook email and sharepoint and website which I don;t use for $139 a month for 2 years.

Hell of a deal I think. They usually offer the package around the holidays

just wondering are you the guy from the commercial from comcast?turtles just kidding
the uploads is the most crutial thing in a connection for speed, if you send a lot of data
if you just surf , can be low dont matter

Comcast gives the best speed and are more reliable imo than anyone else. I chose a business set up for the home office to. I love it. They even ran a seperate line just for the basement computer and cable and phones are on a seperate feed.

It did help that the house was networked and set up for them when they got here. Amazing what some planning can do for you

Basement computer? I'm picturing a Tandy stached between the washer & the furnace!

(Just teasing- I've got a NASTY basement, but I've been in quite a few you could easily live in!).

Re: Comcast ???

Hmmmm, fairly "slow" compared to those who have ComCast, but yet it's not. I'm quite happy with my DSL service. I don't know if the speed is affeted for the simple fact that I'm operating on a wireless network.

Re: Comcast ???

A question: Was your wireless set up securely -- meaning WPA encryption? Not WEP (because it's not tough to crack) but WPA.

If none of this rings a bell (and you were the one to set up your wireless router) then there's a good chance that someone else within 800 feet of your house was jacking into your Internet connection without your knowledge. It happens all the time and often goes unchecked indefinitely. Whether it's accidental or intentional access through an unprotected connection, when this happens it usually causes unexplainable drops in your up/down speeds. It's also the kind of problem that the typical Help Support geek won't try to troubleshoot because it's not the company's responsibility unless they installed the router.

If you want to get your wireless router back on your network, check with your local high school or trade school and ask to speak to the Computer Science teacher. Ask the teacher if s/he can recommend a network-savvy student that you could hire to configure your router. It'd be much cheaper than $150 bucks and if the kid is a hacker he'd probably patch up every other security hole in your network for fun.

Re: Comcast ???

No, I set it up and it's an encrypted "password" that you need in order to access our wireless network. The encryption contains about 20 characters.

Again, I ask -- WEP or WPA encryption for the security setting?

The reason I ask is that WEP encryption for wireless security was cracked about 6 or 7 years ago; password length in this case is irrelevant. Since it's been cracked, there are tools floating around like "aircrack" that'll make it easy for any wanna-be hacker to break into a WEP-secured network connection in under five minutes. I've done it myself to illustrate the point to my neighbor who tried to argue that it didn't matter.

Not trying to scare you, just shed some light on an often-overlooked issue that causes speed problems.

I have my network open. When I check their are no other wireless next to me.
I am considering getting it set up by a pro.
Just for the record
PC 1. Daughter
PC 2. Office
PC 3&4 laptops when I don't want to be in the office.
PC 5. Wife (works from home sometimes).
All have good antivirus AVG plus a couple malware blockers. Rarely have problems with virus, except for the time I went to the Swedish Cheerleader Website, and that was just scientific research.

For what it's worth, other wireless routers set up near you isn't a problem. It's other laptops and computers with wireless adapters within an 800' radius. On top of that, with a minor tweak or two they can get onto your network and be invisible to everything except some good network monitoring software. For a cyber criminal, any open residential wireless connection is an open invitation to commit Identity Theft (steal your name and info from your web browser's temp files, etc) among other things. Unfortunately, outside of occasional abnormalities with your connection speed, it's the kind of stuff that is virtually undetectable for weeks or months until you start getting phone calls from investigators or notice that your credit cards have mysteriously hit their limits at the same time.

Trust me, taking a few minutes to secure your wireless router and plug in the passwords on the other computers is worth it.

On a lighter note, ain't nothin' wrong with a little bit of "scientific research".

Would need to know whether you're on cable, DSL, or some larger pipe (T1+) but that speed is nothing to sneeze at.
