Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
I'm in the market for a good digital camera. I would like to know what I should be looking for in a good camera? I was looking at the Canon eos rebel. Looks like a great camera for the price. Ideally I'd like to spend anywhere between $600-$1,000. I plan to use it to take photos of my work. Thanks in advance

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
The Canon EOS Rebel is a great choice. I have the 30D and just love it - no complaints at all. Check out the Digital Photography review website for great comparisons of different cameras and their specs. I don't have enough posts to post a link but hopefully this will work - dpreview.com
If you're taking pictures of indoor work you'll want to make sure you have a wide-angle zoom lens and a camera that allows you to adjust the white balance and color temperature to compensate for indoor lighting, flash exposure, glare reflecting off finished floors & cabinets, etc. Good luck! |

I've got an old Kodak 4.0 and it's good enough for what I do. I don't take nature shots from 600 yds.

I've had great success with the Canon PowerShot A620. It's at the lower end of your budget range but takes really nice photos. All of the pics on my website (www.builtbymac.com) were taken with that camera.

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
My wife's got the Canon Mac's got for the every-day pix, and she also has a Nikon D70 for the "better" shots. (Get your mind out of the gutter, I'm talking sports & the like!)
The Canon's are supposed to be hard to beat for point n shoot, and there's a lot of pros who live & die by their bigger Nikon's. Personally, I've got 4 Sony's for the company. Each truck has one, and pix are supposed to be taken daily. I like the Sony's because they "click" a shot quickly, and have a large screen. I paid around $200 a piece for them. That Nikon I mentioned is around $1k with a good lens. HTH, ~Matt |

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
The EOS Rebel is a great camera, but it may be too much for what you want to do and is a little bulky just by itself. It is more for someone that wants interchangable lenses and a lot of latitude. I can use all of my good Canon lenses, but you need a bag for the gear.
You need a good "point and shoot" camera. There are many other Canons that will do everything you need without the bulk and interchangeable lenses. My wife has a zoom Canon 7.1 megapixel SD1000 that is very compact, handy, "bulletproof" and works well. I have 2 friends that bought the same camers for use during fishing and hunting (no ultra-telephoto). - It is good because it is always handy. Just make sure you get a big capacity card (cheap 1 or 2 mp), so you don't have to worry about filling it up.

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
I picked up a Canon PowerShot SD870 last Christmas and it takes very good pictures. Its more of a point and shoot camera and small enough that it could fit in your pocket. I did some research on this camera and for what your getting its the best bang for you buck. You should be able to pick it up for around $350.

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
I whole-heartedly agree with checking out "dp review" for the best info on digital cameras. I have an Olympus C5050 that takes great photos but the one I use everyday is a cheap Fuji E510 that has a wide angle lens. These can be had for around $100 new on Ebay and it's a great little camera for portfolio and web work to show your clients.
I did a presentation on this subject a couple of years ago for a local chapter of NARI and I've still got the presentation up on my site. The camera information is dated as far as models and price but the rest of the information is very useful. (Sorry - can't post the link because I'm a new member of this forum and haven't made enough posts yet) Definitely think wide angle to capture most of your remodeling projects. Especially interior work. |

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
The Rebel EOS is a great camera. I have an older Canon (before digital) and beleive it or not the lenses fit. However, for my work and day to day I use a Canon SD800. rechargable, easy to use, and has a wide angle lense, which is very important for taking pics of my decks.
It's also MUCH smalller and lighter. |

Re: Can Anyone Suggest A Good Digital Camera?
Something to consider for any camera that you will use for indoor shots is the ability to take a wide-angle shot.
The limited view on most standard lenses and point-and-shoot cameras will not give you a wide enough shot to really allow someone looking at that picture to get a good idea of layout, or overall changes you've made. I use an Olympus Stylus 720SW and I love it. Easy to use, drop resistant, waterproof to 10'. Its a robust camera, if there is such a thing, but its not for taking glamor shots of finished work. It does not do the wide angle thing. Great camera for general purposes as far as a point and shoot goes. Data is stored on an SD card, and it has a USB cable to connect to almost any PC or Mac around for transferring pics. Todays prices are like $199.00 and up.
