Call Alert

I am so not a computer geek.
I live out in the sticks, we have one phone line, no cable.
My wife is complaining 'cos I'm on the net every eve and people can't call in, (which is fine by me ) so she spoke with the local phone co. and they are sending her a program that will alert me while I'm on the net that someone is trying to call in and display their number. They want to charge $6/mth for this service. It seems to me that there should at most be a onetime charge for this. Maybe the charge is for the call display, I don't know. Anyone want to educate me on this, TIA Rich.

Re: Call Alert

Google callwave...if they're still around they do the same thing for free(without caller ID) or I think 3.99 month on your phone bill if you want the caller ID, billed to your phone as a call to a 900# (which I can only assume is their number and not a phone sex line)

Re: Call Alert

I remember a device that you can plug into the line that allows the use of both. I can't remember much more than that, maybe some of the techies can help.

Re: Call Alert

I assume you have a home office? How about the obvious second phone line. Perhaps setup a fax line at your home and use this for surfing.
