Re: Build To Order Computer

Al,

YOU DA MAN !!!!!!!

Anyone wanna buy a new Inspiron, not yet shipped

I took out the four memory sticks and re-seated. I thought I had "jiggled" them before.

as proof of your sage advice, this post is being typed on that 8100.

Oh well, there's $670 for the Inspiron spent a little early. But the WW's computer has been making some horrific noises. Maybe I'll pass down to her the old dell 4100 and load her Optiplex with linux.

thank you !!!

Re: Build To Order Computer

FORGET A WINDOWS MACHINE AND BUY AN APPLE....

I work on computers everyday, all day. I'm a recent Mac convert. I resisted for along time, now that I made the switch. I can't believe I waited so long. I HATE windows, and I hated them before I even got a Mac. I still use both windoze and Mac, and I hate every time I have to use a windoze machine.

You can buy a Mac mini for about $500 - $700 bucks and it will out perform a big windows machine any day. Plus, there are no known viruses for Mac machines, so surfing the interent is way safer.

Plus there are allot of programs available for the construction industry for the Mac. here is some links.
http://www.mac4construction.com/
http://www.turtlesoft.com/Macintosh-Software.html

Also, if you have to run windows software, you can use a program called Parellels that will allow you to install Windows XP on your Mac and switch between the 2 systems seamlessly. I do it all day, everyday. http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
The funny thing is, Windows XP is still a piece of sh*t even when its running on a MAC!!!!

I'll Never buy another PC again.
Just my 2 cents...

Brian

thanks, always willing to help,
Sounds like the WW's computer is losing its fan or fans. Could be the case fan if its real loud. could be the CPU or graphics card fan if it sounds like crickets in the computer. fans are only a couple of dollars and very easy to replace. There is nothing else within the computer case that will make horrific noises. the only other moving parts are in the drives.

Hey Brian,

all us Windoze drones gotta admit that all we do is complain about the Anti Christ while hearing nuthin but raves about Macs. And what do we do? Keep feeding the monster.

God Damn the Pusher Man !

I have no excuse, I'm addicted. Maybe there oughta be a 12 step program for Windo$e users. "Hi, my name is Arch, and I'm a Gatesaholic"

Yah, Al,

The squeakin and whinin of the Optiplex sounds like at least one fan. Gotta open it and make sure it's not the HD's. They are old and they are only Cavaliers. I try to replace HD's about every three years - - - BEFORE I hear the death knoll clicking.

Mac has it's share of issues as well. The newer OSs are much better than the past ones though. From the people I've known with MACs though the motto is "Crash Different".

Yea, Windoze machines can be addicting. I was there for a long time. The thing with PC's is you can buy or salvage bits and pieces and scrap together a working machine. There is endless upgrading and tinkering if you are into that kind of thing. Plus there are lots of cool upgrade stuff like LED fans, water cooled CPU radiators, etc...
look here >>> http://www.crazypc.com/
There's no upgrades or gadgets for Macs, just open the box and plug it in. All the cool stuff is on the inside, built in to the operating system. (Wait, I take that back... here's a guy who made his Mac mini look like the Millennium Falcon)

Eventually I got sick of all the tinkering and realized it was a fruitless waste of time. I had a really cool looking computer, but it was still Windows and it still worked the same way as it did in an old, ugly box with a slow CPU. I just wanted a really cool, stable computer that did what I wanted it to do with out all the ridiculous tweaking, installing multiple drivers just to get stuff to work the way it should. Something as simple as burning a CD was a frustrating 2 hour process on one of my stupid Windoze machines.

When I got my Mac, which is a dual core Intel based machine, everything I wanted it to do worked! Right out of the box! Burn CD and DVD in record time, Sync via bluetooth to my phone to update all my contacts, plug in external hard drives via firewire and viola! It works!

And Yes, Macs also crash, but its few and far between, but when it does, Mac have a feature that saves all data, and when you turn it back on, it says "would you like to resume where you left off?" How nice is that???
When a Windoze machine crashes a message pops up that says, "F**K you, you should have backed up your data last week!"

I know I sound like a Mac commercial, but it really is the best of both worlds. With the new Intel based Macs you can run Windows XP on your Mac and use all your PC programs. And the best part is, Hackers don't make viruses for the Macs (yet). Think about it.... they target Windows on purpose!!!

I've worked with both Windows and Mac for years, and yes, Macs crash too. But the damage that occurs when a Mac crashes is almost zero. Usually it is because I'm running 10 high powered programs all at the same time. It will freeze and I do a "Force Quit".

The best thing i love about a Mac is the way programs are installed. All programs are self contained in the Applications directory. Unlike Windows that installs part of the program in the Program Folder and part in the Systems Directory and and BIOS andwho knows where else. Every new App installed in a PC makes the Systems folder larger and BIOS needs to run through all that code every time you start the machine, etc, etc. If you uninstall a program, some of teh code is usually left behind in the BIOS and Systems folder, so the OS is still bogged down with left over code...

Macs keep the OS and the Applications separate so you are not taxing the OS with every new App you install. And if you want to remove a program, just drag it to the Trash and its gone... ALL of it. (btw, there is no such thing as "Defrag" or "System Clean up"on a Mac. That should tell you something)

I'll admit... Macs are SO SIMPLE it's a little confusing at first... but once you get used to it, you'll think to yourself, "My GOD, I've been wasting time with a Windoze PC for how long???"

Re: Build To Order Computer

OH and by the way.... Here is one more RANT against Windoze...

I bought a Dual 1.7 GHz XEON Proccesor machine about 3 years ago. It was the top of the line, fastest, most bad-a$$ machine available at the time. It was used for video editing. It had a $3000 video card in it, $6000 worth of software and the machine cost me $15,000 total.
Eventually I sold the video card on eBay for $900, the $6000 software became out-dated and obsolete and then I just used the machine for graphic design. It had 3 fatal crashes, I needed to re-install Windows twice because of viruses, and the hard drive went out and had to be replaced. Finally one of CPU's burned out and now its sitting beside my desk with it's guts completely torn out. Rather than fix it, I got a new Intel dual core Mac and have never looked back.

So here is the punch line to this joke.... I still owe about $4000 on the PC and I'M STILL PAYING FOR IT!!!

CURSE YOU IBM AND BILL GATES!!!!

Some viruses were downloaded, but there was this really bad one about a year ago, I can't remember the name. It was just out there roaming the interent, Unless you had Service pack 2 and all the latest patches for windows, it would attack you computer and just shut it down. It happened on 3 different computers, one was brand new, built from scratch. I installed windows and booted up, before I could even get the service pack cd in the machine, I got it and it shut the system down. It may have even been on another computer in our network. But thats just my point. There are SO many viruses for the PC and Windows has SO, SO many problems, it needs constant upgrades and patches to keep it working. It was to the point my Automatic Updates were giving me 2 or 3 new updates every day.

Here's an article that says, First Ever virus discovered for Mac OSX
Mac's have rarely been a target for viruses becasuse there have been so many holes and flaws with the Windows OS, and 95% of the computers out there are Windows, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Plus the hackers that make viruses use Mac and Unix machines, They HATE windows, and why would they want to threaten their own computers?

I'm not saying that Windows sucks... I'm just saying... Windows Sucks!

Also, it has always been Bill Gates philosophy from day one to "release the product and we'll fix it later". And you wonder why it has so many problems, patches and fixes?

Re: Build To Order Computer

MAC and especially Linux get virtually no virus's because there aren't nearly as many people that use them. I'm sure if someone wanted to target a less used OS they could come up with a few. But you tend to aim for the largest user base, just like advertising!

Oh, I don't dispute that. Windows will always have it's share of issues. I don't think MS did a whole lot correctly when it comes to Vista.
