Completely agree with you all on two topics:

1) RAID is a must, is very cheap, and did come in handy for me just once where the drive failed but my system kept running, then I purchased a new drive, installed it, and the system automatically updated the new drive from the 2nd RAID drive in less than one hour (as far as I can recall from over a year ago) and then I was live again as if nothing happened.
I would not worry that much about the varying types of RAID since ANYTHING is better than nothing, and most contractor's offices will not have enough activity going on that would every impact performance, at least not against the cost of protection.

2) an external backup is good to have with tapes-etc in the event of a theft or fire since RAID will not help you if someone steals the server.

Glad to see you all protecting yourself, it is cheap and easy!
