Audio Preamplifiers

I just got a Sirius Satellite radio. I have used the home kit to hook it into my shop radio through the AUX RCA connectors. My receiver has a small problem with it, it will no go to full volume with a 0dB input. I have known about this since I got it a few years ago. But now I am actually using the AUX input and I need to have the receiver on full blast to get about 2/3 volume out of it. It's only a few watts so getting everything out of it is needed. The radio tuner works good and has sufficient volume. So what I am looking for is a preamplifier to go in between my Sirius radio and the AUX input. Basically I am looking for a small inexpensive low gain amplifier to boost the Sirius radio output about 3-10dB. And yes, the Sirius radio output is set to full. If someone could point me to a link with something that would fit my description I would appreciate it. I have Googled it and spent a good amount of time searching for such an item. I keep finding PRO stuff for big bucks and I am looking for something cheap. I found a kit that I can build for about $35 and so far this is where I am heading. I was hoping to just buy/plug and play. Thanks.

Leo

IMHO, it's time for a new receiver/amp.

Off the cuff, it might be time for a trip to Radio Shack. They're starting to suck, lately.

XM is the choice for yacht owners here. I have yet to install Sirius. Not a lot of Stern fans would be my guess.

How far out to sea do you suppose you can get an XM signal? Do they have the satellites "aimed" to the continental US, you think?

Don't know what you have but, if you have a VCR, try hooking it up to the input and then the output into your shop radio.

MD, most of the cruising sailors that I know have them. They get their weather reports via satelite also. Come to think of it phone and internet at sea is via satelite at $$$$. I stick to coastal waters and cheap mp3 players.

Been there, yup they suck. All they have now is mainstream stuff. All the little stuff is gone. One of the employees there told me that they all work on commision and no one wants to talk to you if you're only interested in a 59˘ part.

The sattelite coverage is virtually the same for both. http://www.xmradio.com/navtraffic/market_coverage.xmc http://satelliteradio.digitalinsurre...rius_radio.php

I have no idea why XM is preferred. Format maybe? No Stern?

I got it for the Playboy Station, man are they slutty.

Channel 19 (Buzzsaw) and 27 (Hard Attack) are my favorites music stations so far.

Re: Audio Preamplifiers

I had XM the day it was released in Colorado. I did let it fall by the wayside though. I will pick it up again once they build my perfect player. It will consist of a portable that plays LIVE XM (not docked like most of the portables) It will have 2-4 GB storage for MP3's and it will have a battery life of 12+ hours it should also have bluetooth to interface with wireless headphones.

As far as the problem goes... Can you get ahold of a headphone amp? I would imagine that would boost it enough to do what you need. Although I would personally look for a new receiver/radio. Some of those little systems can be really sweet. An "executive" as they call them with a DVD player then you can add a TV out there and never go back into your house.

Re: Audio Preamplifiers

I had a similar situation with a 60' run of RCA. I used a Phoenix Gold line driver I picked up for around $65 that can boost voltage up to 8V. (10dB output) It accepts 3 RCA inputs. Its a 12V unit, I use an AC converter to power.

Re: Audio Preamplifiers

Got the booster yesterday. Hooked it up in about 1 1/2 minutes Works good, simple device. Boosts the Sirius output of 1.0v P-P to about 1.5v P-P. Now the radio cranks to full output.
