Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

No flames please! We all have our faults.

I am having a continual problem with, I think, Vista. I am running an HP 9040N with several MS programs. Problem is that all of a sudden, IE will hang up and then I get a message box that says, for example, INTERNET EXPLORER IS NOT WORKING. Other programs will stop working but, fortunately, only when I shut the program. Options to go online and seek a solution bring back a response, probably boilerplate, that it is an HP printer driver problem and HP is aware and is working on a solution.

This also happens with WORD, EXCEL, and PUBLISHER. Same response to online solution. When I shut down the application and restart, it usually runs ok, but sometimes I have to restart the computer.

I did a search for a solution on my own and one site said the problem was the printer driver and that if it was unistalled and then reinstalled, the problem would disappear. No luck and no other solution seems to be available.

Any help out there as I am concerned that on of my programs will do this while running and I will lose a lot of work, even with frequent backups. I am considering going back to XP if this crap keeps up.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

My guess is IE 7 as it was installed 8-07 and we bought the computer in Jan 08. Remember, this happens with other programs as well. Trying to isolate who the problem belongs to; MS, HP, or other.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

First off, Vista Blows. I have it on all my computers, and has been nothing but a nightmare. I have noticed however, my computer gets all F'd up, only after it has done some sort of update. So I sniff my way thru, find that option to undo the update (except critical things). Vista makes a new restore point, just before any update it does, so u might have to go back a ways, to before the problem. None of these restores has every affected my documents or company files (thankfully). If it's a Virus or a hardware issue, drop it in to Futureshop or Bestbuy, have them nerds-to-go dudes, check it out.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

I have Vista and it runs great. Been using it for at least a year. Check out Windows Mojave Experiment. 94% of users say the "new operating system" code-named Mojave rated it higher than Vista. Even though it was Vista and they just didn't know it. http://www.mojaveexperiment.com

The reason I thought about I.E. version 8 was because I was having problems with MS Office after installing it. So I uninstalled it and went back to 7 till they work out all the bugs with version 8.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

I have Vista on one machine and wished I didn't, although I do like SOME of the features.

I have Restart the program twice a day to keep it working properly.

With 3 gig, it takes about 1 gig to operate the system.

I keep my task manager open all day so I can keep an eye on the memory usage.

For reasons I can not find, the memory usage goes up to almost 1.5 gig while running no more number of browsers or other programs than I was running 2 hours ago.

But this is when all software gets sketchy. When the system is taking up around half, or more of the memory (in usage, as reflected in the task manager tab "Performance"), it gets unstable and I start to have the same troubles you listed above.

So, I close all browsers and programs.

Still running at way higher memory than it should be (more than 1 gig).

Restart computer.

Wait 10 minutes for it to boot.

Pain in the ass.

Edit: Also have to clear temporary internet files once or twice daily. This has a huge effect on my browsing experience.

MALCO, you're an ass!!! I know, I know, I know. However, I am stuck with this shiite until I can get a rent-a-geek out here to set me back up with XP or correct the problem. My understanding is that removing Vista is not for the timid and inexperienced.

JonM, I let windows do all the updates automatically and many times I come in in the morning and I need to set my password because of a restart so I know its working. My understanding was that SP1 wasn't going to be available until February. Is it out now?

Danahy, I agree about updates, but what I have found is that HP is the one who screws things up. I have let HP do its thing and find out that my screen resolution has changed, desktop is out of wack, etc. I now don't let HP do auto updates as I select what goes on.

Still haven't found my answer.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

Not a Dell, its an HP. Same thing maybe. The problem, as I understand it, is that Vista wraps itself around so much of programs that UNDOING it is tough. I know its easy to install XP, still have a copy from the last computer. Other problem is that pre-installed programs are also intertwined with Vista that they also need to be unistalled and then reinstalled in XP. Bad news for bundled programs without the disks.

Mutter, mutter, mutter....

The BIGGEST problem is NOT ancillary programs but yer DRIVERS!

Go to HP.Com and see if they have a XP Driver package for your Build.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

Did you happen to turn off the "Windows needs your permission to continue" feature?

I own a computer and network consulting firm in addition to my contracting business and have 0 clients running vista. I have it on my Wife's laptop and it worked fine until I disabled the "Windows needs your permission to continue" feature. As soon as I did, explorer, internet explorer and most every other programs started hanging and the system process kept spiking the CPU.

It would behave for a day or two then start again. Rebooting sometimes helped but not always. Once I re-enabled that security feature, everything has worked fine since.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

I have had Vista for over a year. No problems with any updates. Had same problem with IE. Went to google and have had no problems the last 6 months. Some programs wont work with vista but I knew that before I bought it. That is why I have kept my old machine with XP. Sure it sames a hassle at times but after networking all my pc's I can go from one pc to another to retrieve a file no more disks or floppies. So I recommend you to stop using IE with Vista and try using Mozilla or Google and see what happens.

You could always try Ubuntu Linux. There's a free download for it out there in internet land. It's not command line based, like you'd think, it has GUI interface.

Re: Any MS VISTA Geeks Out There?

Since you requested that we not start with the Vista flames, I'll bite my tongue...

BUT...

I can't think of anything to say about Vista that hasn't already been said about Afghanistan.

Vista is a product that was rushed and probably released about 12-18 months too early. It's a memory hog that is full of drivers that will trip over themselves, conflicting with one another and randomly causing a PC to nod off like a junkie on a binge, only to lag for minutes at a time or cause programs to crash for no discernable reason. Since 2007, in an attempt to stabilize Vista on this laptop I've used programs to go through and clean out registry issues, confirmed that all of my drivers and service packs are up to date, and defragged the harddrive regularly. I've done everything short of chugging a keg full of Holy Water -- and nothing so far as worked.

On the bright side, these days I've also got one of the most stable networks I've ever had to work with.

At any given time there are seven computers up on my network. Only one is running Vista. Two are still running XP (with all the Service Packs and such). The other four machines are running Ubuntu Linux, one of which is acting as a dedicated firewall. Since I've begun my steady migration over to the Linux environment, the *only* machine I routinely have problems with is the Vista laptop -- even with all the Microsoft updates. A couple of my Linux-based machines go for months at a time without needing to be rebooted and they run just as smooth as if they were rebooted an hour ago. Vista can't go for 24 hours without getting flakey.

As a side note, I'm also happy to mention that since my [wireless] network has been predominately Linux-based, I haven't had any kind of a virus/worm/trojan outbreak since 2003 and haven't had any noteworthy adware/spyware problems since 2005.

Vista, Internet Explorer and Herpes -- just say No.
