Air Cards
Now that I have decided to undertake this Galveston job. I decided to jump in and buy internet service for my lap top.
The sales slut from Cingular told me it was broadband and real fast I do not "quite "get service at my house so did a ride and tried it out. It was slow but I only had two bars so assumed it was because of that? Got to Galveston and it is virtually dial up? Went to the Cingular here and they told me they do not have the "high speed" system like the larger towns? Fun e-mailing pics to the customer I guess this is normal?? I was going to stick it up their a?? but even dial up is better than nothing? Any experience with this??

Re: Air Cards
I use cingular. My 8125 has a web brower that connects using their "broadband connect", they have maps for the areas that support it. I know broad band and it is not broad band. I can still check my e-mail, send pic's and get my on-line leads in real time. Overall it is a tool that I need but I would like it a little faster

Re: Air Cards
Compress, compress, compress! Another thing, check to see if there are any wireless hot spots there. Many of the larger hotels may have them in the lobby and many of the local coffee houses may offer hot spots for free.

Re: Air Cards
I have been learnig a lot about these air cards. It went BAD again last night and I spent 3 hours at Cingular and finally found out that there is a gliche with the lap tops own wireless modem...whether it is on or not?
Had to hit a hotel parking lot to download a program and so far so good? Funny thing is I walked into a Starbucks for the first time in my life, paid $3.75 for a coffee latte??? and tried to connect only to find they want me to sign up for web service. I was hoping to not need that again so left and started hitting the hotels Oh, by the way, the coffee sucked!

Re: Air Cards
The air cards are great when you are on the road, I know a few folks who use them regularly and the service is good it you are in or near a major metro area. I am going to have to take the plunge soon but I will be using Verizon as the few I know who use them use verizon, and the coverage map show a little more coverage.
If you are working in residential areas or developments, and you hace a wireless networking card for your laptop, you will be amazed at how many available hotspots you can find where home systems are open and you can pick up a connection. You can pick up a hotspot locator for about 20 bucks at stapes or computer city or whatever local computer chain you have in your area that will show you if a hotspot is available without opening your PC. As was mentioned earlier Hotels are great if your near one, but starbucks wants some "bucks" for the access at the store. |

Re: Air Cards
I use the laptop with wireless at home, in my office, and in Hot spots all over the place.
The entire downtown of toronto is either already, or being converted to, a hot spot, so I'll be able to use it literally anywhere! |

Re: Air Cards
Sevreal non-Starbucks coffee houses offer free hot spot access.
Galveston.com Wifi Zone Strand Street – 2301 Strand St. Mario's Italian Restaurant - 628 Seawall Blvd - 409.763.1693 Diesel Coffee & Espresso Bar - 728 Seawall Blvd. (Seawall at 8th St.) - (409)770-9762 Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center - Seven Hope Boulevard - (409) 741-8484 These are the ones that are popping up on one hot spot search. BTW all Hooters Restaurants in Texas have free Wi-Fi access, FWIW.

Re: Air Cards
A lot of McDonalds have become hotspots now... also, if your computer has an internal wireless modem, you shouldnt need the air card... but Im not a PC Pro, so check with your ISP on that...

Re: Air Cards
I'm using a T-mobile MDA phone and have the unlimited internet plan to go with it. I am able to use the MDA as a USB modem and can hook it up to my laptop which gives me mobile internet. My dad had a Verizon air card and that was a total piece of crap.
