Adwords, Simple Explaination Please

At the risk of sounding stupid, and to avoid hours of reading and chasing threads all around the www,
Could some one spell out a simple explanation of what they are?
Is it a paid service?
Do you just rewrite your site to include them?
Is there a link that will answer these and other questions for people like me who may like to start using them but don't understand all of the details.
thanks

Re: Adwords, Simple Explaination Please

PPC = pay per click

You write an ad, choose one or more keywords, and decide how much you're willing to pay if someone clicks on your ad. You only pay if they click, not if they just see the ad on the page.

I always set a new keyword at $.05 to see how it lands when it's viewed. If $.05 lands it in the top three, I leave the bid there. If it's #20, I slowly start increasing the bid until I place in the top 5. I don't want to be #1, let some other sucker take that hit.

I also never assign more than 3 related keywords to any given ad. It's kind of chunky, but some keywords are pricey and some are cheap. If I can get away with paying 5 cents for an ad click, I don't want to pay Google over a buck for that ad.

Google will want your ad to land on related content in your page. Your content has to be related to your keyword. Choose keywords that pertain to what you do, and where you are, and you should be fine. Say you're a painter in Norfolk, and you buy the keyword "Norfolk painter". Surely your web page says you are a painter, and that you serve Norfolk. So Google decides your keyword is related to your site's content.

You don't rewrite your site for Adwords. Organic listing is another matter altogether. The incentive for organic listings: they're free.

Another reason NOT to be #1 is the eye usually starts in the middle of the page, not the top.

I try to be in the 3-5 average position.

You need to bid $2 in Los Angeles just to be seen, (for electricians) and a daily budget of $500. I use a daily budget of $1000 so I get a lot of impressions, but in reality I never pay more than $30 a day...

So is it like an auction?

Yes. You bid for position. Start low, see where that places you. And pay attention to your position, because people drop out of the bidding when it gets too high.

So, the top bidder may be paying $1.36 for their number 1 position, but I'm number 3 for $.17 - I'm happy.

Supposedly they all can monitor (and not charge for) multiple clicks.

If you add too many generic keywords, you will get too many impression and conversion rate will be too low.

A bounce is when someone hits your page and leaves without viewing any other pages. Google analytics tracks it.

Re: Adwords, Simple Explaination Please

For most businesses, it's usually worth at least trying for a month and following a few criteria to see if there's real return on your investment. If so, you'll stick with it, if not, you drop it.

Criteria:

- MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure you have a good website before you do this. If you have an amateur site, the consumer will be turned off and not do business with you whether they clicked your link or not. This is THE most often overlooked part of an AdWords campaign.
- Choose keywords very carefully, a balance between too broad and too specific is great
- Pay close attention to your analytics (Google makes it very easy in graph and data format) and adjust accordingly

Usually within a month, you find out how many clicks you had to pay for to get a landed contract. Then just run the numbers: Did you spend $30 in clicks or $300? You ultimately get to a figure of $ in clicks / $ in business and that tells you if there's true ROI in it.
