Workers Comp In Ohio

Hello to all.I am a Painting contractor in Ohio and I have no employees so I am not required to carry workers comp.My question is,I have heard you can get a workers comp certificate to help you bid on certain jobs and to show to potential customers without having the actual coverage. Is this true and how do you go about it.I believe it is $20.00 for the yr.I cant find anything on the ohioBWC website. Thanks Doug

Re: Workers Comp In Ohio

State law generally governs workmens comp, though there is federal law on it.

In my state, if you are a sole proprieter, never hire (employees or subs) anyone to work for/with you and only work directly for a ultimate customer (not a contractor) you need not be covered by WC. However, if you work for a contractor (as a sub) you must be covered. If you don't carry your own insurance, the contractor who hires you must cover you on his insurance.

Furthermore, if you bid/bill lump sum, the contractor must pay at the prescribed rate for your trade on the entire bill (labor, materials, profit, overhead). When I get bids from subs that don't carry WC, I add the WC cost to his bid when comparing to other bids.

Doug
http://www.ohiobwc.com/employer/form...ge/default.asp

Fill out form U-3 online. List no employees and no supplemental owner coverage and you can play the paper game for $50. Fill it out, pay the money and you can then print your certificate.

Speaking of which mine expires at the end of this month. Thanks for reminding me!

When I had no employees, I still had a certificate for "show" purposes. I think my original deposit was 10.00 and I was able to file & pay online. Also, check your certificate of liability you should be carrying Stop Gap that fills in any gap the WC does not cover.

The price is now $50.00 year. It used to be $10.

Re: Workers Comp In Ohio

I registered here in B.C. Canada- it will cost me 4.9% of net earnings - wages! not the company profits.... so if I decide that I only want to take 20g's for wages this year, I'd pay 4.9% of that. I don't have any employees, but if I need to hire- I've got the number so I'm completely legal.

Re: Workers Comp In Ohio

On the U-3, just list $0.00 for your estimated payroll. If you elect to carry supplemental coverage on yourself, you only need to report at least 100.00 (800.00 max) per week in income.

Re: Workers Comp In Ohio

Workers' compensation coverage becomes effective when BWC receives the completed U-3 application and a $10 minimum-security deposit. Private employers submitting their application online may choose to print a temporary Certificate of Premium Payment.

This is from my policy.
