When You Get Behind...

...in estimating, billing, paperwork, what do you do? Take a full day off and get it all sorted?

I never want to become one of "those" contractors that doesn't have time to return a call, but I am heading for it.

Re: When You Get Behind...

Taking the day off has never worked for me. paperwork is a funny thing, i have to be in the mood, its tough to force, if i am up against the wall, i will set the alarm for 4am, between 4 and 6 i can really rock and roll. G

I take the day off in the sense that I turn my phone off go in the office for 4-6 hours and I usually am caught up.

I am turning my truck into a mobile office along with some software so I can just work literally from anywhere

Re: When You Get Behind...

I think the answer lies in the way you phrased your question: You need to start looking at the office work (as well as working on your business systems) as part of your job rather than looking at anything that isn't swinging a hammer as "taking a day off".

Re: When You Get Behind...

There is a lot to this question........"I Think?"
DO you need to manage your time better, make some adjustments to personnel( hire someone or fire someone if they are creating too many mistakes & occupying your time)

The best part of all this is you recognized the situation, before it gets out of control

Sometimes I will just sub my next job out to the illegals, then I can get it all done and have some time left over for a little golf.

Re: When You Get Behind...

Thursdays are my day away from the jobsite. I spend the day calling on pricing, getting bids written up, going on estimate appointments, paying bills, meeting w/ my networking group, etc. It's usually a 12 hour day - 6-6.

I'll take and return calls throughout the week but schedule all appointments for Thur. That allows me 4 full days a week to spend on the jobsite (5, including Sat, if need be). That also allows me to show up for appointments cleanly dressed and mentally ready to represent instead of showing up after a day at the jobsite - dirty, tired and not usually on my "A" game.
