Between 500 and 750k I remained on site, above 750k I could justify hiring more employees thus allowing me to do more of what I should be doing...running the business

I agree pass that 750-1mil mark is steep. It usually when you have to make changes. You usually can't do it all by yourself at that point

LOL thats what I thought because I am there right now! I think if I was content with a 750k business it would be pretty easy to substain it year after year. But being at a 750k business when you were no where near it the year before is tuff. I am trying to steam roll right past this point so I can get to the point where I can get the right people on board!

Re: Whats The Most Difficult Stage Of Business?

Volume Growth Stages for remodeling companies

First Stage
250,000-500,000
Owner works on the job 40+ hours. Maybe will have a helper or two. Also sells, estimates, designs and some office work. Some office or clerical help.
Second Stage
500,000-750,000(size of most companies)
Owner handles sales, production, and administration. Usually will have an office manager, carpenters and carpenter helpers.
Third Stage
1,000,000 -1,500,000
Owner runs company and sales. Has production manager, office manager, lead carpenters, apprentice carpenters and laborers.
Stage Four
2,000,000-2,500,000
Owner runs company, and sales. Has office manager, production manager, salesperson(s), office clerk, several lead carpenters, carpenter apprentices, laborers and some trainees.

Going from the first to second stage can be challenging for excellent trades people. Letting go and trusting someone else to do what you do best can be hard. Sometimes we don't believe that anyone else can do it as well or fast as us. At this point the need for processes and systems become apparent. If the owner has a business background it is easier to make the transition. If not it can be challenging.
