I'd say about 90% for me, - - it could be 100% if I wanted it to be, - - but I'm always looking for new 'potentials' (better-paying, closer radius, more easy-going) so I can constantly weed out more of the 'lessers' . . .

Re: What Percentage Of Your Business Comes From Repeat And Referrals?

Sometimes I never correctly identify a referral for a while. We might get a new customer and do several calls at their house before they devulge that they are actually a referral of Mr/Mrs so-and-so. I know some people track this sort of stuff, but when you're as busy as you care to be, it matters less.

Re: What Percentage Of Your Business Comes From Repeat And Referrals?

I think I voted too fast without really thinking- had too much coffee this morning, but for us it's really more like 81-99%. But of those it's their next door neighbors, etc. I love it this way. We love our customers, and the neighborhoods we work in so it's very good.

*Scratch this above statement. I did read it right the first time afterall. So, yes 100%. And that is my final answer people!

I'd say about 90% referrals plus whatever new stuff BM throws at me. BM prescreens them and if it's my type of job I get it.

Busy as I wanna be with 100% referrals. Don't even have my business name in the book any more.

Take a walk on the wild side?
60% new business, very exciting, lots of possibilities.
Relying too much on referals, expectations, friends of friends and all the other bothersome junk,
tie you down too much. It would be too much like having a job.

I like spending my 8% on marketing, get my results, measure my results, adjust, try new mediums, get some more results, play phone tag, check my website visits, watch my closing rates, raise my rates again, eliminate my competition, have fun with Certa Pro, count money, get lots of leads waste some, get some more, hire, keep margins at 50%, advertise some more, adjust again, more leads, more sales, more painters, hang out here, Behr Paints, fun, fun, fun, more leads, more fun, how much to paint my house, too much, more fun, more leads, adjust, try something else, margins still good, take a walk on the wild side...

Too boring for me, I am having too much fun right now
Mine is not the only recipe for fun, but it works good for me

I'm with Copus on this one, I just don't see why anyone would want to go through all what George described (besides the counting money and wasting time part ) unless the people referring you are sorry losers! We have such awesome people from a good neighborhood refering us to the all their neighbors and a realtor refering us to thm too. You make the same money right????? You still price the jobs the same right????? Actually you make more, because you don't have to advertise. I don't get it!

I am sure any self respecting business can include 5-8% for marketing
in their overhead. If not, something is wrong.
Just my opinion only.
I just like when my phone is ringing.
If a neighbour paid 10,000 and their friend expects the same.
(They definitely expect the same when you screw up on your price)
My next phone call could be an opportunity to make 13,000 for the same job.
More new customers, opportunity for more referals right?
Don't get me wrong, we have a CRM program in the works,
I just like new and exciting
