What Is Filing Taxes Like With QuickBooks?

I imagine a lot easier than what I just went thru adding up each and every receipt in Excel!

I've had the program, and took a class on it a few years ago, just haven't had the time to set it up, with having 2 little one's and all.

So, is it very simple- just print up a report at year end and give it to your tax accountant?

I'm just wondering what to expect for next year and am very excited to get Quickbooks set up soon although, I think I'm just going to have to hire someone to do it for me at the rate I'm going!

Well if you have it set up right and enter all your financial stuff right and you burn a CD with the "accountants copy" right, then the hard part might be getting in your car and driving to the accountant to deliver the CD.

Oh, and maybe either spending the refund or writing the check for what is due.

I would suggest purchasing "Contractors Guide To Quickbooks Pro 200X" to see how to set it up for a contractor. They even provide a company file setup for you - saves hours maybe days of time.

Melissa - as somebody self-employed you have to file quarterly tax estimates so at least 3 other times a year your accountant should be seeing your quick book file, unless you are figuring the quarterlies yourself?

While Rich's advice about the book is good advice, you probably should also consider that a good accountant is going to want to set up your chart of accounts based on you being in the construction trade and based on how the accountant is used to using quick books for your trade. Basically most good accountants are just going to set up your chart of accounts for you and then over time the two of you will add, subtract and tweak them based upon your personal business and how best to use those accounts to track expenses and profits.

Ideally you probably shouldn't be printing out anything and giving it to your accountant. Your accountant will most likely just request you to simply email them your quickbook file.

My company's accountant uses remote access to setup and modify our QB account.

So far, we've only been paying once a year, when we file. Our tax accountant hasn't had any problem with it, yet.

So, did most of you set it up yourself or did you hire someone? And if you hired someone, who? And do you remember what they charged?

I sent an email over to our accountant along with our tax stuff asking, but I imagine he's swamped right now and I won't hear back for a bit.
