Waiting On "When Can You Get Started?"

The worse part of being in business is waiting to here if you got big jobs or not!

I have about 350k in proposals out there right now and am meeting with homeowners to go over another 150k this weekend.

The anticipation is killing me!!!! I've been sick all week so i am not out working, so the time is even going slower!!

I am just anxious to figure out how many more guys i will have to hire.

Matt

Careful,

I have seen this happen to many of contractors.

They get super busy and hire a crap load of employees thinking it will always be busy, and than when things slow down and you have 20 guys sitting at home for 2 weeks, you have to be the one to either keep them laid off, and hope they don't leave or fire them during the slowest time of the year.

Either way is wrong, I hate employers who lay off employees consistently. If you don't have the work for them 24/7/365, let them find someone who can!! Nothing worse IMHO.

So be careful before you go buck wild with employment applications.

Yep,

Hate that feeling, that's why we downsized last year....

Re: Waiting On "When Can You Get Started?"

Well i heard back on the big one. They want to go with me. We are splitting the project up though. I am alittle disappointed with that, but i should have alot more fun next winter knowing i have 180k worth of work ready to go when the snow melts. And now that the people will have more time to save up, the options that were first eliminated from the project to lower the cost will proably make their way back into the plan. And that will make the finished project that much better.

I don't see a problem with it if you're up front about the nature of the work. If there's a big job that will end in two months, just say so at hiring. Those who don't want that kind of work will disappear. Those who don't mind will stay for the next round. Department stores do this kind of hiring every Christmas, for example.

Honesty goes a long way.
