Re: Staying Alive In A Tough Economy?
I don't mind. It started out asking about how business is and turned into why the economy is bad. I think it is important to look at the dynamics that cause problems and then we can take a wild guess about the dynamics that will occur with different solutions. I look at what this turned into as motivational or inspirational. Hopefully, the results are; we stop blaming certain people, or races, and we put more energy into solutions that are realistic. Or..... we can sit back, watch television, and wait it out. It is very strange how some people think everything is doom and gloom and some people see opportunities in everything. We have to realize how tiny the earth is and people in other countries are fighting for our business.
This is going to be my last post in this thread before it gets out of control and locked up, or I get locked up in the looney bin.

Re: Staying Alive In A Tough Economy?
This past fall and winter we (meaning the folks I work with in the Construction Unit at my brokerage) figured that we would see a downturn in our work because of the economy. Well, the past few weeks have started to see the spring tenders and prequals coming in for review and amazingly there are about 20%-25% more than last year.
In Canada, especially Ontario, we have also been hit with tough times - maybe not as bad as some of you in the USA but our economy is tied in with yours and Ontario particularly has a large auto manufacturing sector that has gone down the toilet. (No pun intended pcplumber The types of jobs are government-funded though: school additions and renovations, roadworks, bridge repair, affordable housing, nursing homes, hospital renos. No private offices and not one manufacturing plant (except for some preliminary work on pre-qualification for an ethanol plant that would be privately owned but financed in part by grants from the province.) Anyway, it looks like those "stimulus dollars" are quickly making their way down through the system and a lot of these jobs that were shovel-ready but just had no financing are now getting quickly dusted off and put into the works. I'm probably being overly optimistic but I'll take this is an early sign that maybe things will start to turn around and we're going to get back on track in the not too distant future. |

I also see a bit of pic up to. calls are coming in.
Homes are moving a bit again. Remodeling budgets are less than before and closing dates are further out. But all in all I am looking forward to a good summer and end of the year |

But, government intervention provides a short term "fix" - and will likely end up sowing seeds for problems 40-50 years from now. Government intervention is not the solution - and we know that Hoover and FDR's New Deal was essentially a failure. Both men and their "solutions" are eerily similar to Obama - without the fireside chats though, lol What will happen ... is that the very thing that caused this crash .... will cause the next boom (and the next crash after that).

Re: Staying Alive In A Tough Economy?
Not to bring up the 'illegal' thing again, but our government does benefit greatly. The illegal immigrants (all nationalities) who use fake SSN's to get jobs that have withholdings benefit the IRS by billions of dollars. They don't file a return so all of the monies that they did pay in are never recovered in tax refunds. All of my inhouse labor and my field superintendent are hispanic...americans. I am certain I have used illegals in the past, but we try to prevent it by doing what our government requires of us...2 forms of ID and a SSN card on file. It is an increasing problem, but unfortunately around here, they are the true craftsmen b/c all the white folk are on meth or stealing my tools. It is an enigma wrapped up in a kenundrum. Besides that it's confusing.
In terms of the economy, I know its bad and will probably get worse. My company is wrapping up it's best quarter in over three years and we have work booked until August. Hang in there and spend more time and resources on marketing your companies. While all other contractors are shrinking or eliminating their marketing budget you should double yours. Work harder and smarter and hustle hustle huste.

Re: Staying Alive In A Tough Economy?
I don't think that a bunch of illegal immigrants who don't have licenses to get work should be taking any sort of punishment for the way things are right now in fact you should be looking at your supposid pillars of the community for doing that. If anything it has to do with the white banking industry, mortgage brokers and the like doing there usual white collar crimes and getting away with it. Because they know that the white FAT CATS in Washington will bail them out. In fact I think the American Banking industry is the most corrupt industry next to the government here. I think half of what they do should be illegal. If you should be F pissed it should be them riding the poor and middle class using and abusing them then walking away after making millions of dollars off bad loans that half of them knew were bad. These people are liars and thieves and your government set it up for them to do it. No way they are the corrupt liars and sneaks they are the cause of this collapse. With the CREDIT SWAPS, AIG, and Madoff. They stated at a private office in London AIG which keeps asking for bailout money by the way, a small group of immoral white financial dealers found a loop hole so they could make millions of dollars in Bad Credit Swaps which may have started this collapse and now they are giving bonuses with your tax dollars. Money is GOD in this country my friends. There are no morals here. Customers are repsonding to the times, the times that have been created by sorry to say again white rich Americans in positons of power. And guess what they are all LEGAL citizens of the United States of America. That is what should be pissing you off.

![]() And nice try trying to take away from the fact that illegal immigration is in fact a HUGE burden on our economy, especially here in California. I don't totally ,hardly actually ,agree with bailing out all of these banks. But hey,the voters wanted 'Hope and Change" and that's what we're getting.
