Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

That overhead calculator only figures out the overhead for one man hour or one "entire company hour". You can fudge that one and put in, say 24 hours worked per day, if you have 4 men. This would figure out the overhead per man hour and not per entire company hour.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Humm your 100% correct. Im gonna have to add an employee space to the calculations. Other then that does it seem like it would work ok? Seems like our overhead changes alot. Wanted to make it automated so if car insurance goes up just change it in one spot and its all done from there.

Thanks,

Ken

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

I don't think adding an employee space is going to help.

I see this document as a way to keep track of all the materials, overhead, expences and so on. You already know how much to charge out your employee because you already know his/her wages, taxes and so on.

This document helps to say that it costs "X" per hour (in overhead) to send a fully stocked truck to Mrs. Homeowner to install the ceiling fan.

So it could shape up to say;
employee---$22.00
Overhead---$12.75
Total--$ $34.75
M/U@50%--$17.38
Retail rate--$52.13

Just my humble opinion. I think it's a great design.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Well what I was hopeing for is to be able to fill in the colums with say health insurance, Liabilty Ins., Marketing, Office supplys, and whatever else I needed to use in my overhead calculations. Come up with a hourly, daily, and yearly figure for overhead. Then be able to just type in if the health insurance went up $50 and have it adjust the overhead. But MD is right I need to change it so it can have the overhead divided by the number of employees so if there is 4 employees it charges an equal ammount to each employee.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Ok I think this may be a better sheet. I added in a per employee cell and calculation for it. The sheet is protected but without a password because I get stupid sometimes and deleate the formulas.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Ken.

adding an employee space would only work provided that each employee does exactly the same thing each and every day and all employees do the same tasks.

In my case, I have one employee that just concentrates on siding, trim and flooring. That installer has a helper that performs different tasks. I have another that does handyman items. Another just stays with old work. He also has a helper part time. So your document would only work the way you have it set up now for each employee. I want to see how each employee contributes to the overall overhead and where it's all going. So in my case, by lumping them all together, I would get a distorted picture of my true overhead.

I'm not critizing your document. I think it's a great thing to promote.

Since all the trades have such varying degree's of company size, it's going to be tough to develope a docket like yours that would fit all hats. But keep going.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Ok I may be confused on how the overhead needs done. I thought all company expense went into overhead. Then if a electrician gets $15.00 and a helper gets $8.00 you add the hourly overhead you need to make say $2.00 to the hourly pay makeing it $17.00 and $10.00. This way makeing your overhead. Please educate me if thats not correct. Im just trying to make the process a bit easyer for smaller companys such as mine.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Skylands.... you're sorely confusing job costing with overhead analysis. Ken is right on track with overhead. You're right on track with job cost analysis. Job costing is like a micro version of overhead.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

This sheet will give a per hour overhead charge for company as well as per employee. I believe it would work fine for doing hourly based service calls. Well auctually this is the way we figure up overhead anyhow I just wanted to automate the process. Also can anyone help me with some input on how to get a percentage for use on bids? Most GC's I have delt with charge a overhead percentage on their bids and not an hourly rate. This sheet would work fine for me since I auctually sit and disect the prints and come up with as close to an exact hourly charge as I can.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

Ken when I downloaded your spreadsheet my anti viru program picked up a virus, please scan it as well as any one who downloads it should do so. I have a great program you may like for calculating B/E if you like. I will attempt to post.

Re: Simple Overhead Calculator

I scanned it with Avast, Norton, and Trend. All 3 came up with no viruses. I have to say im not only an electrician but also A+ and networking certified. It may be possiable that it was auctually reported as haveing macros. This is an excel spreadsheet as such it does include macros in the calculations. Just to be safe I would recomend anyone who down loaded it to scan it with their antivirus or go to trend and scan it with their free scanner house call. It has found many problems for me when others have failed. Just do a search for house call.

Thank's
Ken
