Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

I'm in N Central Florida and today just pulled my first permit in a certain city

the permit is for a window change-out job that I bid like 2 months ago

we ordered the windows monday night - I go in today to pull the permit, and they say its a 4-6 week wait

UNLESS I want to pay double to have it in 2 weeks - which still aint' quick enough -

I've pulled the exact same kind of permit before, elsewhere, and I was in/out of the office WITH PERMIT IN HAND in like 30 minutes.

What is it like in your area???

RED TAPE here

In San Francisco it depends on who is sitting behind the desk. Just got denied a permit for a job that we submitted for a couple of weeks ago. Permit board decided that they did not like the awnigs on top of the pics. Not historical enough.

Unless we change the header a replacement window doesnt need a permit here. Today I got the hassle from an inspector who just wanted to feel important so he altered my day and my game plan for another several days.

I had my share in WA state. My first permit was 6 months and that wasn't even a hard one. If you had a puddle on your property, call the DEP, 12 months or more. Maine, walk in, walk out. 5 minutes at most if you have your paperwork.

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

If two weeks isn't quick enough, what kind of windows are you ordering? Aren't they going to take at least that long to get delivered? And I'd imagine that the cost of the permit is pretty negligible anyway, so pay double and move on- besides, if you're smart, your proposals exclude permit fees (to be paid by owner) since it's virtually impossible to predict how much they'll be.

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

It took two weeks for the board to decide on the permit. I do not order anything without the permit ok'd first. That would be dumb. Besides, we do actually make the permit the responsibility of the h/o in some cases especially when the historic society is involved which was this case. The h/o was turned down after a few weeks of the permit board tossing it around, but ultimatly we lost the job.

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

Here it varies ,town to town.
Sometimes you walk out with it,other times they tell you it will be mailed.
Ya gotta wonder how long that will take.It usually isn't longer than 2-3 days around here.
Inspections are another matter. One town here was telling me they are 6 weeks out.How do you schedule your subs in this situation?
Sorry lady,you'll be without a bathroom for 6 weeks?I'll get you a Porto-Pot.
I believe the state building code states that all inspections have to be done within 48 hrs,but who wants to PO the inspector by going over his head?I made a stink about it and the inspector showed up at 7:00PM to do the inspection for me.

4-6 weeks for a permit is outrageous for a simple window change. How do they expect anyone to make a living waiting on them?I'd go over his head and make a complaint.I'm sure others have. They can't fix the problem if they don't know about it.

Hope you don't do much work in that district!

I would go upstairs of whatever office you went to where they told you it would take that long. That is most certainly not a normal time for a permit to take. Take a deep breath and in a firm way find out why these folks have something upside down. I'd say they will straighten up and fly right.

In Florida, exterior windows are considered structural (gotta think hurricane winds), so they treat them as such

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

Well, I went in today and gave them another check for almost $200 to "Fast Track" me and have it ready in 2 weeks.

Un - be - lievable

I told them they were 'crack dealers' - they have something they know I reaally reallly want. my permit.

It's such crap because they are encouraging me, whether they know it or not, to work illegally

very pissed at the system
what else is new?

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

I've been waiting for a window permit from a certain municipality for over 5 weeks.

The president of the condo association where I'm doing the work gave the city building dept a hard time a few months ago, and now I'm paying for it - well that's what the condo prez told me.

The hurricane shutter permits for that condo association took about 3 weeks, but the 2 window jobs I sold in there are taking way longer (these are impact windows).
Although I've presented the Miami-dade NOA, and FBC approvals, the city wants to see : wind loads for interior and end zones based on window size and mean roof height, egress - although it's grandfathered, etc.
But before any of this, it has to go thru zoning .

The zoning board here only meets every two months, and you better have your i's dotted and your t's crossed or you'll wait another two months.

Fortunately they are only there for a change in variance approval.

Things seem a little backwards there.Call the state building inspector to check their guidelines.

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

In some parts of the county I have seen the waiting time for a window placement permit 3 to 5 months. I have no idea why something as simple and stupid as that would take so long.

I am a Permit Expeditor and in many cases I can express a permit anywhere in the United States however, there seems to be this thing with Florida. They just don't care.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Re: Remodeling Permits 4-6 Week Wait!!

So i have this big project under works. Before we start, i send my LA down to go talk with the township engineers and building inspectors. They looked over the plans told us what they wanted, yada yada yada. Told us permit takes 20 business days.

It takes us longer then expected to work out finally design, which held up the engineer. So basically we submitted the info later then expected. But we only need the permits for the retaining walls, so i tear apart the entire property and get everything else done we can without doing the walls. We move over 600 yards of material on a 1/3 of a acer lot.

So today was day 20. I called them up and ask where my permit is. The building department sec says " We have 20 days ONCE IT GOES THROUGH ENGINEERING AND COMES TO US!" Turns out engineering had it for 17 business days!!!!!!!

Hopefully, i have my permit when i come back from vegas in a week.
