Per Diem

I have a project coming up soon that will require some guys to stay out of town for several weeks, maybe months.

What is a good per diem to pay the guys for this; ie, food allowance per day, gas allowance and so on. It's been a while since I've been involved with out of town work. Just want to be fair to the guys that are going and add the right cost to the project. I will be paying for the Hotel.

With all the guys out of work around here, they might just go for the baloney and the cola every day!

Well I haven't done this in a few years, but the last time I worked on the road the boss paid for the hotel and we received $30.00 a day for meals, we drove a company truck so gas was not a factor. That was at 2002 prices, if it helps at all.

Re: Per Diem

If its davis bacon work dont give them any, I gave 2 guys 10 days off disciplinary action for leaving a job early going to happy hour and not showing up for work the next day.

They turned me into the DOL accused me of all kinds a stuf , after 2 years of an investigation the investigator told me I owed a total of $250. for rate differental ,on 1.5 gross receipts .I laughed and asked what about room & food perdeium and the travel expense I wasnt required to pay? he said it didnt count, I told him I would pay the 250. but he just brought everybodys standard of living down and we dont pay any more than rate.

It does, thank you. Sounds like it hasn't gone up since the early 80's.

Re: Per Diem

Find a nice extended stay place and negotiate the prices. If you're an AAA member or Amex card holder, or one of 2500 discounted groups, ask for the discount on the corporate rate.

Be sure the price they give is the price after all the local taxes, etc. Sometimes staying the next town over and driving an extra 5 miles or so is much more cost effective if only because they might not have the same tax rate.

Re: Per Diem

I wouldnt pay any more than $ 35 for meals, then ask them to keep receipts for fuel.

$35 per day may not cover all the meals costs, but if they were at home, they would still have some food expenses, so if you cover the difference between eating at home vs. on the road, you've done enough.

Most guys would rather go away and work, than stay at home.

Re: Per Diem

We recently had an out-of town job (apprx. 1 week). The contractor paid for the hotel. We gave our plumber and helper $30ea. per day for food and we gave them a company gas card. Made it simple to keep track of everything. Also, our vehicles are GPS tracked, so the fuel/mileage issue is solved (keeps 'em honest, after all, this job was at the beach!).

I just completed one job a few weeks back 250 miles from home

I paid hotel with continental breakfast, $ 25.00 per deim.

Reciepts for fuel + 10% for wear and tear

Re: Per Diem

I have always thought if a out of town job will last more than a couple of weeks your better off getting a short term rental. A guy can get an apartment for $1,000 a month. Your men have a kitchen ($100 a week for food) and are more comfortable.

Re: Per Diem

We work exclusivelyu on the road and the going rate is $35 per day for meals.

Company pays for motels and company vehicles and fuel are used.

I just got back from a ten day trip and thought as an experiment I would keep track of my perdiem money and how much I spent on food. Out of the $350 I got for per diem I only actually spent $110 on food. Keep in mind I am not spending money on beer and cigarattes as most guys do. $35/day is plenty

Re: Per Diem

Well, I have worked for a few companies on the road and always gotten per diem. Sometimes travel pay too. If you pay for their hotel, I would say $35 and travel pay is pretty good. If no hotel, $75 or even more depending on how high rooms are in that area.

Without hotel being paid for, I've gotten anywhere from $65 - $100.

And those were UBC jobs, hope that helps.

Re: Per Diem

Last time we went on the road, I paid for the hotel. We used my company truck and fuel. I bought all meals on a company card. We eat good, but not every meal. We work nights so we usually skip breakfast or get the continental at the hotel. If we have Mickeys for lunch, then maybe ribs at Outback for supper. My guys don't go overboard. I too am looking for a good per diem rate though in case I don't make a trip. I do enjoy a good filet minion on the road.

Re: Per Diem

The company I worked for in 2006 paid $45 a day for food, paid for the hotel, and had company truck and gas cards.

If the hotel offers a breakfast, you could easily justify paying less (unless your guys start work before the free breakfast starts).

If the trip was a week or less a lot of guys liked to pack food with them and save most of the $45 a day as extra pay
