Do you do your own payroll or out source it?

A p/t "in-house" controller takes care of all the finances...I hate that stuff.

Re: Payroll

Out source to my accountant...rather pay her small fee then deal with the headache. $50/quarter for it and I'd pay 10x's that just to not deal with it

$50/quarter??

How many employees and how often do you pay them? Seems awfully cheap. I pay that every two weeks to a payroll company for 6 employees.

Myself plus 3 for people. I pay them weekly. Accountant wanted to do it bi-weekly, but I was always a happier person when i was punching clocks when the company did a weekly payout, so this is what i have set up for them too.

She only charges me $80 to do my annual taxes too:p Nice thing is she's self employed and owns 3 other businesses so she makes sure to stay on top of the game for guys like us, because it affects HER with her businesses too.

Does she also file your quarterly's with IRS,state, local? what about unemployment and workers compensation? Is it just me or does $280 annually for this seem too good to be true?

She or her assistant have all the "packets" stapled together, envelopes labeled. So she'll call me, i go down to the office, she explains them all like it's my first time I write her a check for $50, I go home, start writing out checks and signing all the documents she's prepared for me, stuff the envelopes, stamp'em and send them on their way. Unemployment/W/C, when she faxes over the guys paystubs (I still write the checks here) she'll note how much i need to deposit for all the things I/we have to pay in. then that account is obivously seperate from everything since it's gobbernment money, not ours.

Seems wayy to complicated for me.

I call in the hours to my payroll co on monday. They take the cash out of my acct pay all taxes and w/c based on payroll. They come by fedex on thursday signed and the secretary puts them out.

$17 per week plus a dollar per check!

me too. except the entire service actually winds up costing about $130 per month. You should check ur statements. When they file quarterly taxes etc. they charge extra for that. The $17 is only for weekly payroll. Who are you using ?

Complicated? I go to her office once at the end of each quarter Other than that, I email hrs and she faxes back pay stubs to me. I goto the bank once a week anyhow for deposits so making payroll deposits and such just takes place at the same time...really not much to it. IF I had a secretary, then I'd have her do all that, but i dont, so i cant.

Re: Payroll

I am using Paychex. I have used them since 2005. Seems like their prices continue to creep up. They do like to charge for every little thing too. I asked them if they could just send me an electronic file of all the paystubs, since everyone is direct deposit. I figured this would at least save some postage. Apparently this service is not offered, at least not here.

Re: Payroll

So you guys are using an external "payroll service company"? No wonder it's so expensive, all their staff has wages weekly too. My accountant only charges on a per hour rate for an all inclusive service of reciept and job tracking in addition to pay rolling. I still do mine old school, gotten burnt one too many times in the past while i was a electronic payrollEE, and have had a few glitches that have taken large sum of money out of my account on my mortage deduct.....so i'm just not comfortable with it, plus the guys have never complained about getting paper on Friday vs an electronic transfer.

So I can understand why you boys are paying premium price for a basic service

Actually it's pretty cheap. Considering they call me weekly and mail the checks to me. I just sign them and give 'em out. PERIOD.

Re: Payroll

I use a employee leasing service for payroll and worker's comp. They charge me 25% more than payroll and that includes all Employer contributions and taxes, WC and about 2% for them. I pay everyother week, They withdraw funds from my account and I require my employees to have direct deposit. Thier stubs come in the mail.
I like not technically having any employees. It's also nice not to have to fill out state forms for employees.

Re: Payroll

I am lucky to have a gem of a woman working for me, has been with the company 15 years before I purchased it and knows the ins and outs of all manners related to money. She, among dozens of other things, 100% takes care of payroll. I don't know what I will do when she retires in a few years...

Re: Payroll

The trouble with outsourcing payroll is that you generally don't have good detailed job costing. Using software to do payroll usually means you have more detailed job costing.

Re: Payroll

I have paychex for myself and business partner it costs me $67.84 per pay period, which is every 2 weeks. They cost too much money if you ask me. I may use quickbooks since it is only 2 of us. Any of you guys use that?

I've thought about switching, but i'm afraid i'll screw up. Filing the quarterly payroll taxes etc..It's also a PITA if you're on site all day, or doing everything already.
