Paying Partime Help

What's your concept on paying part-time help? No cash under the table, I'm talking about reall pay check. Once a week on Friday?

Yes, thats what I do.

Once a week on Friday is what most people like.

Leaves them a nice feeling going into the weekend.

Re: Paying Partime Help

Promise huge pay, work'em ragged, then tell them you wont pay on Fri. then take the wife somewhere nice to eat with their money Worse part is I have a story about that.

Fridays are pay days for any help on my jobs directly related to me, subs I'll try to pay once they are done on the spot to keep settled up and also goes along ways when I'm in a pinch they'll drop what they have going to get over to me

NO, No, NO..... Payday is monday mornings.

That way when they call saturday night for bail money, I deduct it from Mondays paycheck.

Payday for us is Monday as I am on the job on Friday and have no time to do the paperwork.

Re: Paying Partime Help

My husband used to say, payday was Mondays too. That way they won't get all drunk and wind up in jail Less likely to go out drinking on a Monday night. Also gets them to come back for work the next week. But I'm sure Mike has selected a much better hire than what I just described!

As far as part time, I don't see any problem with it. Much better for you this way and some won't mind working p/t.

I pay on Mondays too. My reasoning, I get the time cards Friday afternoon, then I got all weekend to do the paperwork. No hurry.

Yeah, for you guys who pay on Monday, I was wondering how the guys who pay on Friday do it? Monday sounds pretty logical, but what do I know?

Re: Paying Partime Help

If you want to pay on fridays instead of monday why not just pay a week behind. So every thing they do this week they get paid for next friday. Also gives you the whole week to get the paperwork done.

May not work out so well if you're already paying at the beginning or end of every week. Current employees would have to miss a check to get on track. Works good for new hires though. They just do not get a paycheck for the first week. Works great for us.

Re: Paying Partime Help

I think the guys like their cheque on Friday (a little fun money for the weekend). It's common practice for new hires to have their first week held back and get paid for their hours a week later. Like Klik said, would be hard to implement with current employees accepting skipping a weeks pay.

Why not have your pay period Friday - Thursday. That way Thur. night you can quickly figure out the hours and deductions etc, jot down the info, and cut them a cheque. Take a couple of hours over the weekend to update your books from what you jotted down. Would be an easier transition for current employees too (they would lose one day off their cheque instead of missing a whole weeks pay that they are used to)..

Keep in mind I'm talking about part-time help only here.

Say a guy works Tues & Weds that week only. How would you pay him?

We have the occasional part timer.
They get paid on paydays like everyone else.
Every second Friday with QB payroll services.
Cut-off day is the Wednesday of pay week.

Re: Paying Partime Help

I pay my full time employees every other friday. I use a payroll service which calculates all the taxes and with holdings and they charge $35 per run... which is why I only do two runs a month.

I suppose it would be harder for part time help to budget on two pay checks a month and they'd probably need weekly.

Re: Paying Partime Help

I use LaborFinders or subs. The first is day pay and the subs are paid as per contract. No ins. or WC problems.

Our week starts on Friday and ends on Thursday. Time cards turned in on Thursdays, I do payroll Thursday nights or Friday mornings and pay at 4pm on Friday. Full-time and part-time goes the same. If I tried to pay the part-timers based on the days they worked, it would be a constantly changing pay date. That also ties you down to be in the office to do checks everytime a part-timer works and stuck waiting for them to come get it whenever they get ready to show up. Unless you have someone in the office and that's all they do, it's just too time consuming to cater payday to varying schedules.

The exception is subcontractors.. I pay them on completion no matter what day of the week. It helps me keep the accounting in order and happy subs both.

For those types when we're doing say a large roof and need some extra help stripping only, or pouring a large amount of mud for a few hours, etc...I'll get them money before they go to bed that night as a quick "thank you" for making time to help us in a pinch. You drag too many of these essential helpers along and pretty soon they get harder and harder to find since these quick simple favors are a way for them to make extremely quick play money, and they're in no way obligated to help you again if they dont want to.

But I'm labeling these guys as the ones that have real jobs but maybe work a scattered off shift and are there for ya in a pinch when you need a few more hands on deck for the uncommon situations. Cash is always in my pocket before I even get to the job site that morning since I know what's coming and what they expect.
