Need Help Starting My Business I Got Stupid Start Up Questions

I got my DBA and Insurance for remodeling, no additions, or anything like that. Im starting off small but will encounter electrical, plumbing, etc.. Do i need a contractors license. what exactly is one vs. a business license. The questions may sound dumb but i have allways been an employee not an owner.

That is a regional/municipality question Shooter.
Do some leg work and make some phone calls to your local business licensing office. They should set you strait.

Pretty simple:
If you want to do Plumbing - you need a Plumbing License

Electrical or HVAC - ditto

Hang a door, work on a wall, etc... check with the builders board / code officials where you are at. In California - anything over 500 - license please, Arizona - 750, Alabama - 10,000 Those are the 3 states I know of

I suggest you research before you start a business - trust me the IRS, States & other legal entities frown on the ignorance is bliss excuse as they smile collecting all the fees & interest you owe

Looks like anything over $200 in NY.

A person or business must have a Home Improvement Contractor license if engaged in the construction, repair, remodeling or addition to any land or building used as a residence. This includes, but is not limited to, the construction, replacement or improvement of driveways, swimming pools, terraces, patios, landscaping, fences, porches, garages, basements and other improvements to structures or upon land that is adjacent to a home or apartment building.

NY State leaves the licensing to local authorities. Go to or call code enforcement in the city and/or county where you will be working, they'll tell you where to go.

Up here you mostly need a customer and down payment. Our fair city requires a license for plumbing and heating only while the county is unregulated. When you apply for a permit you will be required to produce proof of insurance.

To play it safe, call your County consumer affairs office and ask what kind of licensing is required. As it was mentioned, you can't do plumbing or electric legally.

Here on LI, we're regulated by each counties consumer affairs office and some towns and villages require more licensing on top of that. We also have to have a business certificate which is issued by a separate government office.

Here in VA you need a contractors license for anything contracted regardless of price. Once you say "I will do.....for.." you have entered into a contract and therefore need a contractors license. Any structural alterations or modifications you must have a building endorsement. This proves by state test that you fully understand how a house is built and will be less likely to screw up and get someone hurt or killed. If you advertize, or contract for either flat rate or hourly any plumbing, electrical, or HVAC you must be licensed in that area OR have a full time employee who is licensed in that field.
