Definitly 2.

I go off the deep end once and awhile, but rest of the time pretty calm.

Re: Mean Boss-or Nice Boss

Quick story:

I interviewed a guy one time for a remodeling project manager position....

This guy was really overqualified. He was a job cost ninja, even had a masters in accountancy. But he wanted to move to residential construcction.

He was at the time working for a commercial construction company. He told me about the "yelling" management style that is oh-so-common in construction...especially commerical or so it seems.

Anyway, he described the 6:30 am "Monday Morning Meeting" as a group of red faced managers screaming at the middle managers, no matter whether they were on schedule, or on budget, or whatever. It was their chosen method of motivation. It was the company culture. No doubt instilled by osmosis from the folks running the company.

This guy, judging by his demeanor, his resume, and his hitting it out of the park during our thorough interview process...was the cream of the crop. But they lost him.

He told me, "I'd rather cut off my index finger right now than go back in to one of those meetings."

Ha! Incredible.

Yeah, I'm not really on board with the yellers. I think there's a better way to do business.

But I guess, "to each, his own" as they say.

I tend to try to be calm most of the time, what gets me going on a mad rage is when i got guys building too slow. I started my company 13 years ago, probley like everyone else i started with just me, no employees. now i have usally around 6 or 7. sometimes a bit more. Somedays i wish i could go back to just me and a helper. things always got done right and i never got mad. to be honest i really dont make that much more money now then i did back then. been thinking about going back to small time. but then when do i do all my estimates, paperwork etc. never seemed to have time for it all when i was on the site for 10 hours a day. what do you guys think??

Depends on a lot of factors. For me its time and age. I have more free time when I have guys working for me even though it takes longer than it would for me when I was their age.

Two my body can't take it anymore I am good for maybe one or two days in the field tops after that I am hiding in the truck on my laptop pretending to be on my phone on an important call

Re: Mean Boss-or Nice Boss

Most important to me, is having employees where we have mutual respect, trust, and like each other. I don't want someone to work for me who does not like me for what or who I am, and vice versa. Rather than having a polished shop, where employees call the boss Mr. X, I feel my business is more productive when the employee can 'air-out',,there concerns and frustrations, in an informal manner, as long as they don't go over the line with disrespect.

Yes, we yell and scream at each other, in a respectful manner. A few seconds later, it is business as usual, and we never have bad feelings later. This comes from my being trustworthy, dependable, and reliable for many years. The same with my employees. Many have been here 12 to 15 years, and a few have been here 25 to 30 years. Most of my employees act like they are the owner of my business. Maybe it is like a marriage. Is only one partner the boss in a marriage?

Don't do what you are supposed to do and you better come into my office with your boxing gloves on.
