Marking Up Appliances

Quick hopefully not too dumb of a question for all you kitchen remodelers.

Do you markup the total cost of all the aplliances and fixtures you order for the job? If so how much.....10%.....20%??

I realize that it takes my time to place such an order and I have included the time it will take in my proposal, but do you also markup the cost of the appliances too?

Re: Marking Up Appliances

This would be a time and materials job, presumably? In which case you would surely markup the appliances by the same amount as you were marking up the other materials.

Appliances are usually spec'd by the HO and purchased by them.

If I were to purchase them, I would cover my time. Trying to not look like a rip-off would be hard, you know that they will see the same 'on sale' within a few weeks.

I would mark them up if you are going to be supplying them. How much depends on how much you are going to take on. Like Steve said a lot of home owners want to purchase the "fun" items themselves like the stove but don't care about taking on the garbage disposal, that they will just pick from a tear sheet, but the wife usually wants to touch and feel and shop for the "fun" items.

But if you are doing all the leg work and taking on all the responsibilities of creating the methods for them to do the selection, ordering, taking delivery on and storage and the responsibility of what happens when the black fridge comes in in white or with a broken shelf then you are silly not to mark them up.

If you are totally out of the picture which means no advice given then no mark up, even if I was in the picture a little bit I would still be compensated, I don't regard hand-holding and taking phone calls from them as they make their decisions and having to direct them with advice as being part of the job.

Service isn't free no matter what.

Re: Marking Up Appliances

This reminds me of a time when I had a customer who was very concerned with let's just say getting the most value possible in all aspects of their project. All during the initial phases of estimating and such they kept stressing how they were going to supply the vanity. Fine, end of subject. Of course it never is, as we get closer to start they start the phone calls asking questions about wood species and this and that, then the call about where is a good place to buy it, then the best one of all - can you pick it up for us when it comes in? That's when I asked them how much are they charging for delivery and they tell you the place they bought it at wants $90, so you tell them, that's pretty cheap because we charge $120.
