Making A Profit Off Of My Master Electrician Lisence

I got a call today from a local electrical company, that lost their Master Electrician. They guy says that he was wondering what I would charge to inspect and pull a permit on his permitted jobs. They claim to make $80k a month.

Has anyone ever done this before? How risky is it? What do I charge if i decide to do this?

I know someone who "qualified" an a/c company a while back, he was getting 5% of the job gross, but then he ended up losing his license due to bad workmanship in-correct permits, bad financial management etc, he could have put up a fight but could not afford an attorney and was just plain ashamed about the whole deal.

He is back up on his feet again now and doing fine, by the way.

If you decide to do it, please do it right, i.e. attorney.

I have a plumbing Master and an Electrical Master that both will pull permits for me on jobs, then my crew does most or all of the work. All we're doing is residential additions and remodel work. For a small electrical job, like one that would normally cost $4,000 or so, the electricain charges me $500 if the job is not too far away from him. He looks at our work to make sure he isn't putting his license at risk. The plumber is not quite that careful. He charges me $125 on a permit and advice is a beer or two. Relationships and trust matter a lot of course. If you look at the job, get a feel for who will do the work, inspect the work at a point you decide is necessary to see that they aren't screwing it up and look at it for sure before inspections then I think your risk is low.

You might want to make sure it's even legal in the jurisdictions where you operate. In my neck of the woods, you can lose your license for life pulling permits for other people, if the licensing board chooses to go that far. I know that in Florida, for instance, it's a quite normal legal and accepted practice. That confounds me.

isn't bsecdone a master licensed electrician???

way i see it ... you have a company who just lost their master electrician

so they call up Bsecdone b/c he (im assuming) is a licensed master electrician capable of pulling a permit. And then they want him to pull a new one

ok ... so the SOL company ... cancels their permit
hires Bsecdone as a subcontractor
Besc pulls his own permit
Completes the work under his own permit
SOL Company pays Bsecdone

I think SOL company wants to develop a relationship with Bsecdone such that he'll do this for all their future projects, and not just so that they can finish this current project. At least that's the way I took his question.

Scary territory, if you ask me. I'd rather my screwups be my screwups.

I don't know for sure if that is legal or not, sounds pretty shaddy and a rip to licensed contractors....
Meaning, some GC knows the electrical portion will cost him 20K to have subbed (sp?) out, he pays his crew to do most of the work, than he finishes it off. Cost him 2 grand in labor, 10 grand in materials and maybe a grand or 2 for the licensed guy to pull the permit and his time to look over everything. GC spent 14K, charged HO 20, he just paid his mortgage - cars - boats - payments....

Some local guy just lost money because a licensed guy sold out.
However if it's legal......more power to them

Re: Making A Profit Off Of My Master Electrician Lisence

I have a masters license. It sounded lik ea good way to put some money in my company. But, i've been thinkin about it these alst few hours. I am trying to build my business the right way. From talkin to this guy, he wants me to sign off for his buddy to get his master lic.

But, wait one sec. I worked for a company to get mine. Then i started my company. I didn't go find work as a RW and then look for a Master to help me pull permits.

So, thanks for makin me think everyone. I'm going to keep workin hard and suggest the same to the other guy.

Good thing you don't use your real name, I'd be embarassed and ashamed too if the only way I could make a living is pulling the sh*t you are pulling.

Good choice, just ask yourself, why would anybody want to slit the throats of their peers, not to mention help destroy your own profession? Why be a whore for somebody just because they are willing to bend you over and leave you a few bucks for your troubles?

Turn that piece of sh*t into the building dept and anybody else you can think of.
