Interesting Web Site

Mr. Decks out of California. http://www.mrdeck.com/arbors.html

I love what he says at the bottom of the page and a few other locations throughout the site. He shares my attitude with cheap assed people.
He has created his Niche

Yeah, he's a hoot, the best part is the "comics" section of some of his previous experiences with "troublesome" clients...

Re: Interesting Web Site

Wow, he means business huh?
If you contract with me to do your design, here's my advice: avoid laying the "poor is me" trip on me. I'll detect that attitude in short order; so if you have a limited budget, please spare me from the opportunity to design something that will never get built the way it was designed.

At 67 years old and 24 years in this business, I'm fed up with all the manipulative demeanors I've encountered over those years. At this stage in my life, I'm not going to tolerate anyone's condescending demeanor, vacuous promises or insincere behavior at any time during the project. And I'll not tolerate being treated like a second class citizen.

If you are honest, forthright and of good moral character, we'll get along. And that's the only kind of customer I will deal with.

As we get older we get smarter

Yeh, if you read his procedures he isn't taking any shortcuts. Of course he tells you, you are going to pay for it. Not a lot of wasted bids for this guy.

He does do some nice work and has specialized....I hope he gets what he wants.

Maybe he's established himself(owns a lot of property that brings in enough income) enough to not have to deal with lowballin', pain in the ass clients and/or he's just to damn old to deal with that B.S.

Hat's off to him

Re: Interesting Web Site

Been a long time since I saw this again.

Just goes to show you, if you create a product so good you have no competition you can write your own ticket.

Quote:
If we accept your project for further review, you will be required to pay a $250 up-front service fee for MR. DECK to visit your location and meet with you on-site to complete the evaluation.
Quote:
During the on-site visit, if you wish to proceed, you will prepay a design-work drawing fee, usually in the range of $300 - $500 per structure. Each design drawing is necessary for doing a cost-evaluation because it helps me figure out what it will take to do the project as designed and it provides me the means for deriving the material portion. It's the material costs upon which the labor and shop overhead costs are based.
To do a cost-estimation, a $250 fee is charged per structure. This fee will be applied as a credit against the purchase price if you elect to haveMR. DECK prefabricate the structure and its designated contractor participate in the building of it.

Re: Interesting Web Site

ya know, he's so big on copyright stuff, but if he took those images for his "Reviews of the Ridiculous" from other websites, he's guilty of copyright infringement himself.

I was thinking along the same lines. Of course, he may have contacted the project owners and gotten permission to take his own photos and use them as he pleased, in which case there is no infringement.

Any way you look at it I think it is in poor taste to bash other perfectly legitimate work that just doesn't meet your eleveated standards because you're at the top of your field.

His work looked pretty awsome from the glance I took at it. I didn't look at it very closely as I sometimes have cause to design a pergola myself and don't want to be influenced (or litigated and bankrupted).

I liked the attitude.

He demands respect from his point of view and fees that he deserves to charge in advance.

Great Niche capture.

He gets my thumbs up. When you are on the top of your game you can be demanding. I would assume that he does not wonder where his next meal is coming from.

I had to leave his site after a couple minutes before I got any ideas.
