Incoming Resumes

I posted an ad on CL for a job opening. I say in the ad to email resume(to the blind email address)

First email that comes in is a guy asking if I have a fax number.

Do I ignore the email with the thinking that if you can't follow the only instruction in the post and email the resume that's already not a good sign?

How do you guys feel about posting "blind" ads for employment? Is it fair to ask someone to send a resume to a mystery company they know nothing about?

How many times would you
like to explain "No" to a new
employee?

Maybe he doesn't know how to do an attachment.

It's simple and routine for those that have done it, but mind boggling for someone who was never shown or tried.

I think of my parents when I say that, God Bless Their Souls. But, at least they try to learn at the nice age of 74.

They even took some 101 classes from the Library.

See what the guy has to offer and if you need him to be tech-savvie, then consider the additional training issues.

Re: Incoming Resumes

Orson, it is not possible to attach resume on CL blind mail. You just try to attach you resume or photos from your personal e-mail, to that your blind mail and see what happens. And by away I will not send resume to the nameless company.

Re: Incoming Resumes

These are ruff times man, dont be so sure. You cannot measure the potential of an individual without hearing it & seeing it. I dont care what a resume says or how they apply. Its just a starting point. If i was hot for work, id do ANYTHING to get that interview and that chance to prove myself.

I guess its like saying a guy that shows up in a nice shirt and tie cannot frame, paint, or pull wire...

My rule of thumb= filter filter filter..... Keep 3 names... 2 are back up incase #1 is a doosh bag sack o shet... If all 3 are bad... owell, it will save you more in the long run to keep looking.
Give them a day to prove themselves - never let them work more than 1 day if they dont meet your expectations. Its only fair to BOTH of you.

shrug.. so he doesnt attatch a file... Hes not applying for an office job or is he?

I'd give him a fax number, if you do not have one give him an address to send it to. If he doesn't have a copy of his resume in a computer file it's going to be a pain to jump through a bunch of hoops to email it to you.

He would either have to type it and save it as a file or get it scanned.

Re: Incoming Resumes

I get attached resumes to my blind email ad on CL. Also thinking back to the old Newspaper classifieds they were usually blind ads too. Many companies dont want their current employees knowing they are hiring.

Re: Incoming Resumes

There will probably be a good number of applicants who won't apply to a "blind" ad for fear that they are writing to their current employer. You may therefore find that most of your respondents will be limited to those that are unemployed. This may or may not mean anything, but sometimes the better worker is the one who is working and not the one who is out of a job.

What you might want to do is let your current staff know that you have an ad on Craigs List. If you feel comfortable sharing the detail with them, then show them the exact wording of your ad. Then, in your blind ad include the following line: Our employees our aware of this posting.

Resta,

Most of the blind mailings coming in do have a resume attached.

I did send the applicant our fax number.

After screening out the riff raff I respond to the applicants in an email that includes our company logo and phone number requesting references and more detail.

It amazes me that almost none of the resumes include any work or personal references...maybe we need to start a "how to write a resume" thread here in these tough economic times.

Very very few in this industry have written a resume in their life

Re: Incoming Resumes

Lemme jump in on this one.

We just hired 3 guys, 2 from a weekend ad in our local paper, 1 saw our truck & called.

We had one guy who listed his full employment history with contact info, dating back to the 60's and including his Vietnam service & awards.
Amazing. Not a fit for us, but very impressive. His resume was typed out, and no copy was provided; I had to copy it & hand it back.

I was surprised by the overall low quality of the applicants. We did a lot of "weeding" to get what we did.

Re: Incoming Resumes

I've hired my three newest employees from CL--an office staff person and two craftsmen.

All have been excellent additions to my company.

The office position was a blind posting and I received probably 50-60 responses. Of that, probably only 35 or so paid attention to the directions and requirements in the ad. Of those, I interviewed 6...and second interviewed 3.

I receive cold inquiries with resumes on a regular basis and I'm often shocked at the lack of "common" sense in the format and content. Many times, I get a resume blind emailed to me without the slightest introduction or how-D-doo. The best ones are those who call asking for work and immediately give you attitude when you're not.

I think it's good to provide some hoops to jump through to weed out the "not-in-a-million-years-" types. For a craftsperson, I wouldn't expect them to be tech savy.

And yes, attachments work fine to blind CL response addresses.

Re: Incoming Resumes

Stating that references are available on one's resume is considered redundant these days. It's assumed the applicant has references - employer just needs to ask.

Why should I have to ask?

Why do you think it's standard?

If I want to stand out from the other people competing for the job I'm going to offer every relevant piece of information I can think of.

Re: Incoming Resumes

I put my replies in folders for future reference, but would not respond to a reply asking for a fax number. Surely if its someone seriously looking for work they can send a resume or even just type in some background info.

It could even be someone wanting to advertise to you. The only replies I respond to are the ones with work history info that matches what I am looking for. The rest are just wasting my time and theirs.
