I Wish I Had This Deal

I went to pick up a Roofing permit in a town named Hoffman Estates today and if I were a contractor who did not own his own dump truck, they gave me a placard that states that I am only allowed to hire ONE Dumpster pan roll-off company.

Their company name is Groot.

WTF???

I can see if they contracted for public work contracts and had that exclusivity, but how in the Hell is it legal for them to tell all of their resident home owners and their contractors which Dumpster Company they can only use?

I think I may check in and see how much of a Mayoral Donation it would take to get the exclusive rights to be the Only Roofing Contractor allowed to do roofs in that town.

Do you think that would fly?

WTF???

Ed

Give it a shot, I saw on the permit of the job I'm on that only one dumpster company can be used. Thats' in Oakbrook Terrace. Don't know if it's something to do with permits, but it is BS. I think they are probably related through some way or like you say, making rather generous campaign contributions!

I'm surprised the politicians around here can even hold a pen with all the greasy palms around here.

Re: I Wish I Had This Deal

The city of Gardena allows only one trash company in the city. They said it was because the needed to meet some EPA (or whatever they are called) requirements, and the city was going to get fined by the state, and the city would save thousands of dollars of our tax money by having one company service the entire city. I have three 3 cubic yard bins at my shop. I have them picked up 2 times every week and pay about $600 to $700 per month. The city uses the same company for the city residents who do not pay for trash. Maybe, the city gets a super discount on their portion of the trash service. Maybe, the city pays only $300 for the same service I pay $600 for and this is accomplished by giving the monolopy to one company who knows where to put the grease.

I was really upset and sent a letter to the city. I had a small independent company and it was like doing business with a friend. He lost all his accounts in the city and had to close his business. Now, I call our new trash company and they put me on hold for up to an hour when I need an extra pick-up. Then, they lose the order and my bins sit in the street for 3 to 5 days when the miss me on a weekend. I can't fire them and bring in another company. I own a house on a commercial property across the street in a different city and thought about getting cans from a different company I will and carry my trash across the street, or bring it to the city hall and let them deal with it.

Re: I Wish I Had This Deal

I could understand if it was an exclusive contract for the residential and commercial trash, per negotiated bid, but for individual jobs by individual home owners and contractors, something definitely smells fishy.

Like PCplumber said, once they have that monopoly, you are stuck with them. Whatever prices they want to charge and whatever service they provide, you are stuck, whether good or bad. It is not fair business to the other companies that provide that service. I thought we were a Capitalistic Society?

Re: I Wish I Had This Deal

Some Cities in Florida have the same thing. In a lot of cases the dumpster company also does residential trash pick up. They CLAIM that the dumpster company loses money on residential trash pick up, so by giving them an exclusive deal for commercial and construction, they can keep the residential rates low. Homeowners vote based on their pocketbook.

By the way, the going rate for a 20 CY dumpster seems to be around $300 here.
