Re: Hows Things?? Busy, Slow?

Doing just fine... in fact I have 3 other builders/GC's that are calling me wanting me to sub from them in addition to the work I am getting. I have some new marketing to be trying out on the next few jobs... Cant wait to bury myself in work!

Re: Hows Things?? Busy, Slow?

I can't even begin to explain how swamped I am right now. I got work til' next year and it keeps coming in. Mostly developments like Offices,restaraunts,retail,etc..all pad site work, shells first than the fit outs. Plus I am doing a huge 72,000sqft warehouse build out project for a private contractor, turning it into 48 soundproof studio's, so it is almost to much.

I have went from 8 guys to 14 guys and I will DEFINETLY be picking up at least another 6 guys, so I will have 4 crews of 5. A very large interior commercial contractor has gone under here in MD, and I am trying to pick up some of thier guys real quick. Hey, they had 205 field employees, so if I can get even 4 qualified guys from that bunch, I will consider myself lucky. I never really get "slow" in the sense that I always have some type of work, but this surge that is going on right now has just sent me overboard and the crew I have now cannot handle it all. Plus I have been getting offers from large firms forever to bid on larger work, and now I may take a look at some of them.

At first, I was weary about growing quick due to the thought of things dieing off, but the way commercial is booming right now, and the fact that the builders/developers I've been workin with for the past 6 years straight never seem to take a break, or stop giving me work, I won't be slowing down. I have been in an expansion stage for awhile now, especially since starting my EIFS division, but I wanted to expand a lil' slower than I am, but I guess ya gotta roll with the punches. Plus one of my high end residential builders has just broke ground on a subdivision so I don't even know how I will get to them when it comes, most likely sub it out.

But, I know I am busy..I hope everyone else is!!!

Re: Hows Things?? Busy, Slow?

We are busy and multi-booked in the New England area.
Stacks of estimates/proposals to do, as well.

(FWIW: Our area of the trades; remodeling, additions, commercial remodeling, drywall, and water damage repairs)

We have work and a few estimates to get to..but how do you get stacks of estimates to do? I could use some additional leads...lead services seem to be slow..the newspaper never got us much. Were pumping out flyers and radius pieces...thats keeping us busy but we would like more leads at this point. I would like to be booked 3 months out for 3 crews thats busy.

Well,

We are fortunate, we have a good reputation.
We don't advertise, but we have been in business for over 20 years. We get alot of repeat and referrel work. A phone call out of the phone book every now and then. We also do work for 8 large investor owned luxury apartment complexes in our area - They alone keep us very busy.

Right now, I have to do these estimates:

Multiple drywall jobs
2 whole house Residing and window install jobs
2 roofing jobs
4 painting jobs
Waiting on plans for 11 new const. houses: Drywall, paint and siding work
Several water treatment buildings; various remodeling areas
2 kitchen remodels
4 general remodels
Condo development 7 slider replacements
Various misc. small work; Front door, gutter, window installs.
and more ...

Like, I said, we are fortunate, I know alot of contractors that are slow...

(FWIW -We're all clean cut, try to do top notch work and put 110% effort into maintaining a professional customer service/interaction level.
Also: The tel. numbers that we list always go directly to our cell phone, people love that, instead of getting an answering machine)

Re: Hows Things?? Busy, Slow?

I have 28 decks booked to start. They range from a low of $5000 to a high of $28000.00 (5 are over $20,000.)
I also have 8 residential fence jobs, a commercial chain link job for a brand new car dealership, and 1200 feet of wood fence to replace at a condo.
We're currently running 10 crews. I could use 4 more!

I got alot of people expecting me to start work in the next couple weeks.

I am going to end up subbing out all the excavation and masonry on these jobs and shave about 3 weeks off my backlog.

I am also going to pick up a few part timers for the summer to get us through the summer.

I need to start working on finding another crew leader. But i just can't just hire the first guy that awnsers my ad. I need to find the right person.

If i can keep a solid 12 week backlog i'd be happy. It takes atleast 2 months to get any big job off the ground anyways.

Re: Hows Things?? Busy, Slow?

3x $1.5M homes done with rough-ins the builder wants me to go in and terminate, but they haven't paid for the rough-ins yet.

2 more $1.5M homes on the same site waiting for rough-ins.

Row of 9 live/work towns to rough-in starting in 2 weeks. (same broke builder)

1 big $3M home rough-ins done, waiting for terminations.

Golf clubhouse that needs to be roughed-in, subbing for a buddy.

2 tract houses that need the standards, subbing for a buddy.

Little jobs here and there mounting displays, installing central vacs, garage door openers, wiring up home theatres, etc..

Now that I don't work in the office for the above mentioned builder I'm trying to do all of this full time, and I've only worked 1 day this week so far. Rest of the week I'm reading Markup and Profit and learning lots.

Now I want to get my van's rust repaired, painted and lettered so maybe I can get some more jobs.

Things are looking up for me after a brutally slow May.....Just booked two high end bathroom remodels, one of which I thought I had lost due to high price.
