Handyman Services - Extremely Profitable - Learn On Own Accord?
I currently run an overhead door service company. I have a few property management companies that have used me exclusively over the last 5 years for any repair or replacement job that they have required for any overhead door or automatic opener. So far, this has been all residential property jobs, the majority of the work has been for townhouse condominium complexes.
I learned the business via my father and my grandfather that are in the same business. Now I am wondering, what other home improvement services, or even a move to commercial services that I can offer that you would recommend that would help me to expand my business? The problem is, I do not have much time to go to any trade schools or apprenticeship programs in order to learn more skills as I am newly married and have a child on the way. I need to find skills and services that I can 'hopefully' learn on my own, or as I go. Services that would be very profitable and in demand. I have no issues with hard work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

You don't necessarily need to know how to do the actual work in order to run a business that does said work. If you try it that way it'll be hard to move very far from what you know.
Business is business, that's why a guy who is a VP at Coca Cola can make the switch to being VP of Apple computers. Totally different businesses but same basic job. You just need to know how to hire and manage the people who can get that work done. Systemize. I'm in the middle of starting two new businesses, one I know about first hand, the other I actually know very little about but I feel very confident about it. Hope this helps. Wack

have a think about these: Electric automatic gates - high end properties and estates. fit the gates and do the groundwork or sub it out. Gate manufacturers will teach you how to install openers if you speak to a representative. Same kind of principle as what you do now. Disabled access - automatic doors and ramp access. Parking Lot barriers - automatic access, again sub out work you don't want to do and learn from manufacturers. ummmmmm.... there must be more ideas..... Automated security shutters? Think about what knowledge and experience you have and what you can transfer over within that area. Theres loads of different things you could do with just a bit of thought and a lot of lengthy play-dumb phonecalls to manufacturers of these products. |

Sort of obvious, but get into commercial OH doors. Great money, especially when they want you there NOW when some truck has hit the door and its holding everything up. Car washes are great for this type of business since they have a lot of idiots driving through their property. Things get rusty fairly quickly as well.
Since you are dealing with electronics already (automatic openers), other electronic operated devices as mentioned previously could be a natural selection. |

As long as you're getting into commercial overhead doors why not get into commercial metal frame doors? They're pretty easy to set. If you're setting a whole bunch of them make a door slab template out of plywood to square up the opening and rock and roll.
