Good News, And Bad News

well I did what I said that I wouldn't do- I quoted a guy over the phone. He was pushin for a quote on a 20 x 12 room (8' ceiling) 4 inch crown, six corners. I said I gotta see it etc... but he's in a hurry, moving in (today) etc... darn! I said really rough? 300 bucks - so then he goes on about contractors trying to rip him off etc... then he says the words of death "I gotta check with my wife" damn, I blew that one - lesson learned!

k, next: I took a job for a couple that needed 20' (ya, twenty feet) of baseboard installed in their kitchen - figured I had the day free anyhow- so I get there, do the work - and they want me to do three rooms of crown and baseboard in the front room- they said what they liked was that I showed up with professional tools (scms, compressor, hitachi finish nailer etc..) guess they'd had a go around with a handyman who came with a hammer and a few nails, and a coping saw... which upon thinking about it, probably not a bad way to handle a 20' job... who knew? I guess you never know.

Mac.

Sometimes you just have to tell them the way they want to do business is not the way a true professional will do it, and that you would rather be considered a professional than a guesstimator.

Friday morning, I told a prospect that I did not think that we would be a good fit for his project. He was a referral from a really good friend too. I hate to give up on any referrals, ever.

But, he called up 3 times on Thursday and by the 2nd call on Friday, after my secretary had already told him the several day lead time for his measurement appointment, he still wanted to know if I thought I would make it out there the same day. I have other appointments scheduled and I told him at first, that I would see if I could squeeze in the time on Saturday. He still wanted a commitment for the same day, and that is when I knew I would not like to work for him, when that was his 5th call in 1 1/2 days.

ya and when he starts the conversation off with "people trying to rip me off" or words to that effect.... hmmmmm

as for the price? it was a guess. figured about a 1/2 day's work... but who knows, might have been that my saw would be two floors down and outside, painters doing the floors, furniture in the way etc.... could'a got s****** real good on that one..

I remain optimistic I am beginning to get some jobs

Be ready for it if he does call back though!I made the newbie mistake of throwing out an estimate for a job that I WANTED, because the guy didn't call back for about three months.Well I'm doing it this spring and now I look like a jack azz cause I have to take his contract and make a copy of it for myself! Last time I ever give up on a prospect!

NEVER GIVE A PRICE OVER THE PHONE, (yes, I've done it). Every single person who presses (not asks for but the pushy pressing for a phone price type) for a "ball park" which they promise not to "hold you to" price IS A PRICE SHOPPER (why is that a revelation) and the only way that you will get their business is to BETHELOWESTPRICEwhichmeansyouwillmakezeroorlesstha nzerodollarsandincaseyouarewondering, thespacebaron mykeyboardjustdied.Iftheypushforaphonepr icejusttellthemyou can't help them, hey it came back and save yourself a lot of trouble.
