Friendly, But Business Referral

What do you pay a person for a referral who was a project manager on the previous jobs at this site but is no longer in the state but has been the person doing work for this client for year? He has asking me what i want to give pay but i haven't given him a answer yet.

After eading this a time or three, I assume someone worked at this site for a year or so. This person is no longer at this site. But, the op got work from first persons referral. First person now expects compansation for the referral. Right? If so, what do you normally pay as compensation for a project such as the one he helped you get? Imo, him being gone has no bearing on the situation if his referral helped get you name on a contract.
That being said, was compensation discussed before hand? Do you normally pay for referrals? Has he got connections that will allow him to steer more work your way? The last question may not be relative to this situation, since he did help steer this project your way.
I am assuming no compensation was discussed? If so, it may pay in the long run to compenate something. I would compensate a traveling bum, if he helped me get a profitable project. But, I would want to know before hand that he is expecting compensation.

I agree...looks like a referral fee is being requested...if there was no mention of a fee, and he did indeed hook you up to get the work, an honorarium may be in order, but not on a continuing basis...he got you in the door, he is not the GC keeping you there. I personally would not pay, unless it was by prior arrangement...you have the work, and you apparently are doing acceptable work, so you will probably keep the client.

Re: Friendly, But Business Referral

Guys I just spent about 45 minutes typing trying to clarify myself for all those who didn't understand what I was saying, and my computer shut down right at the very end of doing so. I'm not retyping all of that, but I will say thanks for your feedback it was helpful i'll be more descriptive next time, Boman and Joasis were right on in their analysis. I've decided to clear thing up with this person who gave me the referral, before I get to far into my bid. Thanks for taking the time to read this thread.

Re: Friendly, But Business Referral

When we had a small textile operation, a guy told me he knew someone that might be in the market for some shirts. I told him I would give him .50 for each dozen they bought. I should have gone into more detail with him. I was thinking one sale maybe. They became repeat customers. After paying the referral fee a few times, I thought I can't keep paying between 1 and 2 hundred every week or so for ne referral. I talked to the guy and explained it, paid one last small settlement, and everything was fine. I kept the customer for a long time. The guy who gave the referral was not a saleman or even in the business. He was textile worker in one of the other factories that knew someone who was starting a screen printing business. He seemed okay with it. I felt a little tinge of guilt though.
