Finally Happened To Me On EBay.

Well, it finally happened. I've bought ten's of thousands of dollars of items on eBay, and I've been very proud of the fact that I've never been burned. I've had a few hiccups along the way. Items arrived damaged, items slow to ship, etc., but they were easily resolved with the seller. I've never paid for an item that never arrived.... until now. Luckily, the item was only $10.95. First time for everything. It's been a month, and the seller is ignoring my messages. Why wouldn't the dirt bag just refund my stinking 10 bucks?

In any event, I highly recommend eBay to anyhow as a source for whatever you're looking for. My rule of thumb is to never pay more than 15-20% of the true retail cost of the item, and it had paid dividends for me. Getting ripped for ten dollars in maybe 30 grand of purchases ain't a bad track record, I think.

Re: Finally Happened To Me On EBay.

I've bought a ton of stuff for my boats on E-bay and always had good luck. I get my rope for about 1/3 of the boat store cost.

The whole waiting for the last minute to bid can be a little addictive.

Pay with paypal and you can file a despute if you don't get it. If the sellers does not refund or provide a tracking number Paypal will refund in fear of a charge back from your credit card company.

Highly recommend using PAYPAL as well. They will refund your money with their protection plan. I have had hundreds of great easy ebay transactions and have had one bad one, but I got 100% of my money back from PAYPAL. They are great. Bid away my friends!

Did the sell have a good reputation?

Seller had a good rep. I opened a complaint several days back, and the item arrived in the mail today without so much as a comment or note. Guess my problem's solved.

same here Md, tens of thousands of sales and purchases and only one screwin. A nailgun that never got shipped. The a-hole said something along the lines of the gun came up missing then played dodge ball and never refunded me.

I still get pissed thinking about it.

Re: Finally Happened To Me On EBay.

That sucks, my girlfriend's father got burned by one of those DVD scammers and she got burned for over a thousand by a guy with thousands of positive feedbacks, but she disputed it with the credit card company and got the money back. Took a while to catch him, but the scammer is in jail now: http://www.goodtopics.com/forums/auc...ine-fraud.html

It was one of those second chance offers, so watch out for those.

Another problem to watch out for that we had was that we "won" an auction and the person shipped a different item (used a photo they found on the web) and didn't want to return the money. Filled out the online eBay complaint form and they ask if you received a package, if you say yes, eBay says there is nothing they can do, doesn't matter if it's a box of sh*t or an empty box.

I got an empty box once, but the large spline drive bit had obviously broken out of the end of the box somewhere along the line. The seller quickly sent a new one. In my opinion, he wouldn't have had to have done that, but he did anyhow. There are still more good people than bad...

Yeah, I agree there are still more good people than bad, I've had very few problems. I did think of another scam, this was where I was the seller. I was selling some antique auto parts from a parts car on eBay and sold the guy a cowl for a '59 impala (nice shape a few pin holes) for about $25, the kicker was that it was $30 for shipping because it was an oversized item (still cheap for a hard to find piece). Anyhow, I ship the item to the guy and get an email a week or so later saying it was the wrong part and it didn't fit. I responded by telling he might need to adjust the hood or fenders, he responded in a nasty manner saying it was the wrong part and that he wanted his money back plus the shipping and pre-paid return shipping if I wanted the item back. Now I'm positive that it's the right part, we physically took it off a '59 Impala, so I check his feedback and see that he purchased an entire parts car that had a cowl, I informed him of my discovery and that was the last I heard from him.

I did have someone try to lower the shipping cost on an item I sold them because they thought it was to high (I usually round to the next dollar or exact for real expensive items), I told him I would go ahead and submit it as non or partial payment to eBay, he paid.

Re: Finally Happened To Me On EBay.

I've bought and sold on Ebay over 60 times now and only had one bad experience. Luckily it was for a cheap $9 cell phone accessory. The guy sent me the entirely wrong item. He then proceeded to completely ignore all messages.

I gave up and gave him a negative rating and he turned around and threw a negative rating on me! I had a 100% rating so this was just icing on the cake. I was pissed at him, ebay for not protecting me and myself for caring so much about a $9 item.

I continued to message the guy and ended up filing a motion to remove our ratings. He eventually agreed. What do you expect from someone that sells thousands of cheapy products on Ebay... It isn't very difficult for them to maintain a >99% rating if they only screw one out of 100 over.

Moral of my story? Watch who you hand negative ratings out to... there's a good chance they'll slap one back at you. It's such a shame.

I still love Ebay!

I've gotten negatives for leaving neutrals. Long ship times, item not exactly as described, etc. Nothing I'd call a deal-breaker. Just disappointing. In my book, a neutral rating should be a for a run of the mill transaction, and the positive should be for something exceptional. Leave a few neutrals, and see how torqued people get. There's definitely a defined culture among eBay sellers, which I've only just begun to understand. Leave a neutral, and you might as well have said something bad about their mother. The sellers that won't leave feedback until you've left yours bother me also. If I pay, they ship, and I receive the item, they're done with me. Leave feedback.

That would piss me off, they do a crap job, you leave a neutral, which probably should be a negative, and they give you a negative, for what?, paying quicky and expecting the item you purchased in a reasonable amount of time???

I never leave feedback until it's left for me first, no negatives yet.

That annoys me! You as the buyer purchase something and you do all the correct things such as payments and paying quickly etc, then the seller does not give you feedback UNTIL they recieve yours first. I'm with Mickeyco. It should be the seller gives feeback first. Not the buyer!

Re: Finally Happened To Me On EBay.

I stopped leaving feedback on eBay back in 2001, I think.

It's essentially useless at this point with eBay being as big as it is.

No matter how great someone's customer service is, if they've done 10,000 transactions, there are bound to be a couple of dicks they've dealt with that have negative feedbacked for the sake of being dicks. You can't make everyone happy.

I had a buyer threaten to negative me because they overbid for an item. It's not my fault they overbid. Anyway, I told the guy to go ahead and negative feedback me because I have 500+ positives and he had 7 total feedbacks. I'm pretty sure that if I put "Buyer was unhappy he overbid and is taking it out on me" next to his negative, most rational people would see that I was in the right. I never heard back from the dude and he never feedbacked.

eBay is going downhill fast. There are rarely bargains and I often see items listing for more than I could walk into a local store an buy them for instantaneously. Too many people are using eBay these days and there is too much junk on it. Literally. Some item categories are littered with guys from Hong Kong selling clones/knock offs/non-oem parts.

When I sell, I try local craigslist first. It works WAY better than ebay with no fees-- especially for hard to ship items.
