Re: Family And Business, Mix???

Our company is a family run business, my dad and I are the two principal owners, we still argue but I wouldn't have it any other way. However we manage different aspects of the company. He takes care of the construction management side, and sales. I handle the actual construction and labor management side. We each have our own projects and touch base with each other about five times a day. Just to see if the other might need a hand.

Partners are made for dancing

Family business is tough IMHO - adding inlaws to the already difficult equasion is even tougher!! I hope all works well for you!

Like everything, there are positives and negatives. We've been family owned since '65 my Dad has retired leaving myself, a brother, and a cousin. At least we are all blood; I've always shied away from hiring the in-laws.

Re: Family And Business, Mix???

Part of my family don't mix w/ business

My wife can't stand to hear me say one word about painting, she wants to help w/ the management side but can't seem to start and focus. We have a 2 yr old that is keeping us busy too.

Now on the other hand, my father calls me all the time asking if I am getting more calls and jobs (since he wants to give hands-on help)
And all the other Family always asks how is the biz going

Its just the People living and breathing the business that get sick of it
Too much can ruin your appetite--but not mine!!!

hehe

Re: Family And Business, Mix???

I do not believe business and family should ever be mixed. My brother wanted to move back to town and his fiance asked if they did would I give him a job and my answer was "only for a little while until he finds something permanent." Last year I was so over burdened I was working 15 hour days on a short day. My wife wanted to help me,a nd I let her help me for a few weeks until she started discussing work at home.

No business and family do not mix. I even try not to do any work for family. I usually just give referrals to my subs and tell them I would be more than happy to "consult" for them for free, but I am not responsible for anything. Why? If something were to go wrong it's my reputation. It's not worth it to lose a friend or family member to a few hundred bucks... I mean afterall I wouldn't feel right with my normal markup for a close friend or family member anyways. Therefore for me it's lose lose.
