Exit Interview, Any Ideas?

Does any one have a sample exit interview that I can borrow? I lost a sub today that has been us for about 5 years and I would like to learn from the experience.

2nd thing, Since his answers might be tainted if I conduct it or if my office manager conducts it, is it cool to have him fill it out by e-mail?

Side note- he is leaving on very good terms.

If it's on good terms, why not just sit down and talk about it over coffee or a beer? Since he's a sub, I don't think it needs to be real formal for CYA purposes. You just want to learn, and an informal setting might be more conducive to that.

I'd vote against an email interview. It can be very difficult to communicate via the written word, and misunderstandings occur very easily. Have a heart to heart.

We talked today for about an hour, I think it is mostly a mid-life thing with him. He blames most of it on money, but his desire to work has decreased over the past year. He makes less than half of what my top producer makes because he turns down jobs.

Since he is a friend he will be/is unable to tell me where my company has faults face to face.

Then maybe you could contact an HR outsourcing firm and pay them to conduct the interview. Pay him a fair hourly rate to attend, and you'll have a good shot at getting the info you want.

If I was a sub and you tried to exit interview me, I would tell you to wait a second, I'll be right back, I forgot something in my truck... oops tail lights...

Exit interviews are for employees.

Subs are - "hey, what's going on, why don't you want to work for us any more?"

Mike he got out of the trades.....sold his nice dump trailer and took up a factory job (big pay cut). I offered him a sales job and spent a month training him......he just lost his love for swinging a hammer and now has no interest in sales either. Close to zero customer complaints in 5 years and two in the past week. Something snapped and if it is at my end I need to repair it and move on.

If I can learn from an exit interview then they are not just for employee's.

"if it is at my"=a record for 2 letter words.

wiseasss! Most of my subs hang out with me outside of work for fishing and other stuff. We are just a bunch of business owners that like to fish, play poker and stuff that we don't talk about on-line.

Doesn't sound like a situation where it was anything you did. Anybody doing that it's something on there end.

Hey, won't hurt to find out, I'm all for that, I just don't see any connection to what I would an consider an exit interview to be, but hey, what ever works for you, works for you.

Don't forget to ask him if he was tree what type of tree he would be. just kidding.

Re: Exit Interview, Any Ideas?

Something else in his life went awry. Be a friend, if he needs someone to talk to. Maybe about a month from now, he will open up an be more forthcoming about what "His" reasons were.

Do you have a gut feeling sense that anything else is rocking the boat amongst the rest of your subs?

Probably not, right?

It's not you, it's something with him.

Some of my best employees turned out to be ones who departed on good terms and came back several years later, re-seeking an opportunity now that they saw how green the grass on the other side of the fence was not.

Stay in casual touch with him though, in case there is a quick turn-around and you want to give him another shot, but its probably too soon for that part of it.

Re: Exit Interview, Any Ideas?

P.S.

Untill he accepts that his life is in turmoil and he is willing to do something about it, he will be heading farther and farther down the pit. He has NOT hit his bottom yet.

Don't allow him to con you for any money out of pocket more than you are willing to throw away. The sales job and the $$$ that come with it are not right for him at this period in his life.
