Employees And Employers National Stats


From time to time we get a lot of questions or comments about the quality of employees, the headaches and frustrations with getting good help, are things worse now? Are employees different today?

It's tough and sometimes you're left wondering if it's just you, your company, the specific sub industry you are in or maybe your location, or you just have no idea at all.

Sometimes the best way to get an understanding of your own situation is to understand what other people are doing.

So here are some nation wide statistics from a recent trade journal that surveyed remodeling companies with sales from 500,000 to 6 million. You can see what others are doing and at least have a basis to compare yourself to.



Do you test field employees before hiring - 44% No, 56% Yes

How do you test? 9% written math, 10% written reasoning, 22% construction knowledge, 59% hands on.

How do you find applicants? 5% bulletin boards, 6% employement agency, 14% internet classified, 25% newspaper classified, 51% word of mouth

How do you rate the supply of applicants? 18% Good, 50% fair, 32% poor

How many applicants do you interview for a position? 3% more than 15, 6% 11-15, 32% 6-10, 58% 1-5

How has the quality of applicants changed in the last 5 years? 27% increased, 73% decreased.

What is your average retention time for an employee? 5% more than 10 years, 19% 6-10 years, 40% 3-5 years, 23% 1-2 years, 11% less than 1 year.

How old is your average worker? 3% 18-22, 28% 23-29, 64% 30-49, 5% older than 49

What is the number 1 employee incentive you offer? 6% paid tuition, 15% profit sharing, 19% Other 26% insurance, 33% advancement opportunities

Do you have a formal training program? 23% yes, 62% no, 14% plan to

Do you have any special recognition programs? 81% no, 19% yes

Do you have a formal review process 46% No, 54% yes.

How often? 21% quarterly, 26% semi annually, 53% annually

Do you put off hiring when you are too busy? 50% Yes, 50% no

Do you have written job descriptions? 43% No, 57% Yes

Is the immigration status of applicants a concern? 74% no, 26% yes

Do you feel you can compete with other remodelers on compensation? 12% no, 88% yes

Do you feel you can cmplete with other job makets on compensation? 30% no, 70% yes

74% don't care about the immigration status of employees? I guess thats why we keep getting audits from the Department of Labor. Luckily we do check drivers licenses, and 'proudly employ American labor'.

That one stuck out as weird to me too. I think it's misleading in the way they worded it.

I think it was meant more only the lines of "are the new issues with dealing with immigration status a big deal to you?"

I'm more shocked that 57% have written job descriptions!

I guess I took that wrong too. It would have been interesting if the words legal, illegal and immigrant staus had been used together.
