Employee

I was just reading another thread and had soe questions. This has been Bothering me for a year now. I have a emloyee who has been around for almost three years now almost 2 by himself. Here is the good stuff he shows up everyday and his work is good. the issues are he ever ever does more than the minimum he has to do. I have and tell him 5 times a week to clean the front and back of the truck. I have to tell him to clean and pick up the shop everyday. he comlains he dosent make enough money but calls at least 3 times a week wondering if he can call it quits for the day. He shows up in the morning and just stands there till i tell him to get moving. And one of the worst things is i have had some good employes and they will come in early get started loading there trucks and he will say something. like what are you doing here early you dont have to be hhere till seven. So my question is should i cut my ties or is it me. It is hard having a trained employee but he causes me more headaches then i can take.

Re: Employee

Well, if he's doing a good job and making you a profit I wouldn't do to much right now. Make sure the guys that come in early know you appreciate it.

If you are looking to advance him, I would say no, hire someone else. If you want to add another leader, look to the guys coming in early.

Re: Employee

He doesn't sound very hard to replace and it doesn't sound like it would be very hard to get somebody much better as a result. Personally I wouldn't want a cancer like anywhere near my company. He sounds like one of those situations where 6 weeks after he is gone you end up wishing you had gotten rid of him a lot sooner.

Time to trade up.

Re: Employee

Has anyone actually flat out told an employee they're going to lose their job if they dont step it up a bit? Would it actually help, or would the employee take offense and truly become a cancer on the company? I suppose it all depends on the type of person they are, but I'd like to hear if anyone actually had a discussion like this...

Re: Employee

Some questions for the employee:

You have been with me x number of years. You know the routine. You do good work. Why do I have to tell you to get moving??

You feel like you do not make enough money. How can you afford to ask for so much time off?

Why should I have to remind you to keep the truck clean?

According to laws in your area, I would think it wise to research ways of cutting ties with this type employee, if that is what you decide to do.

Then again, some make better leaders than followers. But, some are the way they are regardless. Be interesting to have a crystal ball and see what if.

Re: Employee

I had a guy like that, always on time however about twice a month he would bang in sick either on a friday or a monday.
And yea he did start on the other guys on " Hey whos makeing all the money"
I layed him off well over 18 months ago, and he got a new job a short time later.
My son in law works for me about a year ago he took his 2 weeks vacation after the birth of our first grandchild and that was going to leave me short on help.
Being a plumbing contractor I needed good help.
I asked around and got in touch with a girl to work for us as a day payer to assist on that project, and I can say I have never had a better enployee.
She has been here a year, and I can truly say what a change that can make on a shop.
