Does Your Mailing Address Hurt You???

I do alot of mailings. I am not completly satisfied with my results. I live in one of the northernest points of nj. I am mailing to areas 40-60 miles away from me.

Do you think people may be hesitant on calling me because of the town I live in?

In NJ they have the office complex where i can have a 'virtual office'. For 100 bucks a month I get a great mailing address and phone number. Do you think it would make a difference?

Discuss.

I think...possibly...many of us want someone "local"...if you can work your advertisements without stating that your "not local", I would do so.

State the areas you serve...and we're local to "wherever" you are advertising to.

Why let your advertisement possibly curtail your work area...unless that's what you want it to do.

Otherwise, you're possible paying money to tell potential clients not to call you.

Change your printing to , "Servicing ABC areas." Also you don't need a virtual office. You can buy as many numbers as you want to ring on one phone. My buddy has offices in 4 states and covers about 25 cities or so. All calls come in to Wichita but the area codes and first three digits on his ads are the same as the area from which the calls originate. People call from Dallas at 2am and say that a pipe has burst and their basement is flooding. The call is answered in Wichita, KS and the customer is told that a tech will be out in less than 30 minutes. Next thing you know he is depositing a check for 40k for the cleanup and rebuild. Customer never knows that the call came in to the home office 300 miles away and that their is no "Dallas office". Only three men on call 24/7 with nicely logoed vans and a big storage unit for the fans and such.

40 - 60 miles away can mean a far way away to some people when it comes to community....

It MIGHT. Someone like me looks at every aspect of any mailer... They fascinate me actually ALL advertising. To me it might affect my decision but it would depend upon the rest of the mailer. If it was amazing and exactly what I needed and you obviously service my area I would pick you.

They might not care. They may even be willing to pay for an estimate.

In NJ, the one reason I can see they might balk is if you told them they were the ones paying for the tolls back and forth.

I wouldn't think it would matter, but you know your neighbors better than I. If you were in less densely populated area, I would say yes, it would matter.

In someplace as populated as northern Jersey, I can't see it making as much difference. Not all business types will be allowed in all communities there because of zoning, etc.

Now, if your return address is the state hotbed for drug activity, then I might worry.

I would advise against leaving out your address. Reputable companies always show their address and anyone who just showed a phone number wouldn't get a call from me

Re: Does Your Mailing Address Hurt You???

In my experience, mailing address matters, around here anyway. The towns are so small here that they only have a small post office with a PO BOX available to those that want it. The physical mailing routes are handled by the nearest towns, and some of them are, well, red-neck. We opted to use a PO BOX in the town we are based to avoid giving the wrong impression about our business.

Why are you mailing 40 - 60 miles away? Why not saturate target communities within 20 miles? mike

Re: Does Your Mailing Address Hurt You???

Depending on where you are, I feel that sometimes being far away from what is considered "local" does in fact hurt your business.

Example: I had a potential customer call me today from 65 miles away. This call came in on my 800 number. When I explained that there would be a trip fee charged they were no longer interested in having me come out.

This would have been a major bathroom, hallway and kitchen remodel from water damage. Including structural repair, drywall, cabinets, subfloor, tub and tile.

All insurance work so the money would have been there.

The major issue with them came from not knowing how far away I am. The 800 number threw them off. I have other customers complain that they have to call me direct and pay for that call so it's a lose-lose situation.

Re: Does Your Mailing Address Hurt You???

I used to know a guy who owned a video duplication business and he claimed he had offices in a few major cities across the US. He had phone numbers with those area codes as well. In reality, he had only one office in Los Angeles and all the calls to the other numbers were routed to the one office. People would think they would be calling New York or Florida and they were actually calling Los Angeles. I can't remember if he had addresses or PO Boxes set up in those cities or not.

Re: Does Your Mailing Address Hurt You???

I worked for a company that had an address in a lot of cities, and the attendant phone number. People would sometimes seem ticked off when they found out we were really not from their city. What they did was basically rent a "phone jack" in the basement of an office building in these cities. The mail (what little of it there was) was forwarded by the management company of those buildings, and the phones never actually rang there... there were automatically forwarded to the real office with call forwarding.
