Do You Shake A Woman's Hand?

It used to be protocol or social acceptable that when meeting a husband and wife you shook the husbands hand only and you greeted the wife verbally and with good eye contact.

I often waffle back and forth on this. Especially when I meet just the female of the house by herself I often don't offer my hand out to shake hers upon initial greeting or leaving. If she offers hers I shake it of course but I don't initiate. And I often wonder - did I insult her by not extending my hand to initiate a hand shake?

What do you guys do?

I shake the hand of the husband firmly but not over powering.

I try to grasp the ladies hand softly with my hand under hers, like if I was going to plant a kiss on the back of their hand with
comfortable eye contact and give a courteous response.

Funny you mention that I just did it recently and a female homeowner giggled and thought it was gentle like

Re: Do You Shake A Woman's Hand?

I was taught to wait for the
lady to "offer" her hand.

Seems to be a lot less handshaking
in general these days.
I hold out my hand and get odd looks
more and more often.
Maybe everyone is getting germ-o-phobic?

I always offer a hand to all I meet.

I was taught to treat everyone equally, no matter gender. If I offend, which I've only done once that I'm aware of as the woman was Muslim and quite traditional, I apologize.

Mike, I'm right there with you. I have no idea what to do sometimes.

Treat all women like your mom or grandmother and you'll be OK (usually).

I might just start giving knuckles to everyone to make it easier! It works for my six year old daughter.

See below:

ETA: I googled that pic. NO RELATION, I SWEAR!

Shake a woman's hand only if she offers it.

Re: Do You Shake A Woman's Hand?

I think it's our age, 40 + , because I remember it the way Finley originally stated it. I am always caught off guard when they extend the hand, sometimes I do the "wipe the hand on the pant leg" before the shake.

I always shake the womans hand. I just stick my paw out there and the look in their eye says it all. They know I respect them and am treating them on equal footing with men. THEY LOVE IT! I'm not bashful about it. It goes a long ways when having to deal with them later on.

Re: Do You Shake A Woman's Hand?

Good Question! Sometimes when I offer my hand to a customer, they are a little surprised. When I offer to a fellow contractor in a business or social scene it may set the "tone". I am not the "little woman", I am a contractor!
As a woman, I usually offer.
As far as should you shake a womans hand, I say yes! Sometimes a gentle two handed shake works also.
In my other job, I teach. The other day I was doing mock job interviews with students and we practiced how to shake hands and I never even thought of this! I taught boys and girls to shake, smile and make eye contact!
