Difference For A Name

Remodeling, Contractors, or Home Improvement?
I am not sure how to put this but what are the differences in these as far as names of business? I guess what I am asking is if I wanted to use lets say "Smith Remodeling" or "Smith Contractors" as example only, what makes me a remodeler, contractor, or home improvement?

"Smith Home Improvement" sounds cool but it does limit you to residential. Not literally, but a small store owner who wants a refurb done might skip past you to the listing for "Smith Remodeling"

Do you have a specific trade, or niche area that you work in, or are you a general contractor? Like if you did bathrooms or kitchens or decks or something specific you could be "Smith Bathrooms" etc.

Thanks Lee,

Yes Sir, thats really where I am at right now I install Flooring, wood, laminate and tile as well as Interior Carpentry, so not sure which market to approach. Have done several jobs where I also did the painting and more?! Don't want to lock myself just into the flooring side, letting potential customers and companies know I can handle more of their needs. Just not sure how to label a buisness in a proper or correct general catagory without deceiving, confusing anyone?

Maybe "Smith Construction?" That way you are not tied into anything and can still hit niche markets with targeted advertising if you choose....my 2 cents is up

Re: Difference For A Name

I struggled with this when I formed my LLC. I left it all out except for the company name. I didn't put construction, remodeling, renovations, carpentry, or anything of the sort in the name for the reason that things change and so will I (and this company).

You can add any type of text into your company logo, but you don't have to register it that way. Save that for marketing when you might need to chage things up a bit.

Our Company name is New Venture, LLC but our logo looks like this.............

Re: Difference For A Name

Thanks Copus that's what I was leaning towards simple and covers everything!

Wow, Jason I hadn't even considered that route! That would solve alot of my delimas! I was worried about having to go down and register everytime I got into something new or market for something different...

Since starting out as side jobs it's always been more like "Smith's Floors & More" just wanted something general and professional before registering and getting all the logo's going.
Thanks for all the advice and help yall are great!

Re: Difference For A Name

If your looking to use a last name or something, consider names like "The Smith Group" or "Smith and Associates"

Yeah, generic has benefits, but the more specific your name is, the more quickly people will be able to identify what services you offer. Personally I went with a very generic name that is specific to the industry - Cole Construction.
