Bidding Local County Work

We are about to begin bidding our first big county job. The local police department is building an on-water boat house for their police boats and jet-skis. Nothing fancy, just bigger than what we normally build. The new boat house is on the lake where all our boats, barges and pile-drivers are kept.

Looking for some advice on the bidding process ... really not sure what to ask so if any of you have done work for your local county gov't please chime in.

Re: Bidding Local County Work

The last public job I bid (3 weeks ago) had 21 GC bidders for a $3 million project. Low bidder was about 10% low, but he's probabily going to get the job since you had to supply a bid bond.

Make sure you fill out all the paperwork correctly. If you happen to be the low bidder (and in my experience, the government ususally takes the low bidder), don't be surprised if the second bidder objects, claiming there is some kind of a mistake (i.e. you didn't submit a form, words and numbers don't match, etc).

Re: Bidding Local County Work

One challenge I foresee is one of our competitors was a county councilman. Not in this county, but in the one next to it. I am sure he knows who to talk to.

Don't contract work with California county as their budgets running out.. or you will get a I.O.U payment ticket (it will pay later when/if stimulus gets in)???
