Bid On Tile Jobs

Hello everyone,
I am a tile setter from Raleigh NC with more than 15 year experiences in commercial tile setter. Normally, I sub out jobs from local Tile Contractors. It been worked well up until now. We have been sitting around for couple of months without any real job.
Sadlly, I am lossing my guys one after anothers, theyare really good installers.
Recently, I've been looking into the local GC's plan room for biding tile jobs. My question is: where do I go from here? what kind of licenses do I need? Can I bid on just labor or I have to provide materials as well?
I dont have bond, just liability, is that OK for biding on small jobs?
Thanks in advancefor your responds.

In montana subbing from a sub is the same as a general really. In montana you dont have to be bonded, some high end and commercial jobs say you need it but thats it. You should be able to bid it just the same.

Check with your State organization that issues contractor license's. They will have the details as to what you can bid, such as price, etc.

Many of the official jobs require a license, workers comp, insurance and your ability to prove prevailing wage on jobs that call for it.
Go get a license and you can bid on everything....in your field

Or hook up with a GC that could mentor you down the path. You might be surprised how these relationships can work. If you know a GC that you can talk to, go lay it out for him, and who knows, he may give you a boost.

Re: Bid On Tile Jobs

I was speaking with a friend of mine (CA contractor) who does work for the Federal governemnent and he told me that there is no requirement, such as a contractors license, to bid on a federal job. Now this sounds a little far out even for the feds, since there is a myriad of problems that can arise from not using one, such as liability, workmanship, etc. Are there states out there that don't require a contractors license to bid on jobs? I could only see that as not being biased against such states that don't have a requirment. Has anyone had this experience ?

you need to be registered on the CCR but no real icense needed, just keep in mind when you bid yo9u have to show what licenses you have and the people that assign the work will most likely pick someone licensed over someone not in most cases. Because even though they usually pick the lowest bid they are also expected to pick someone who is qualified.
good luck though

yes, NY is one. There are no state requirements for a license!
I am told we used to require licenses, but they did away with requirement.

Strangely enough, I recall hearing this same thing. Which is odd because CA has some pretty stringent licensing laws and procedures. Not that they field enforce them but they are there.

It may have something to do with keeping the federal work open to everyone, and someone without a license can actually manage the jobs and hire licensed contractors to do the work.
How the GL would work on that, beyond me.
