Re: Best Way To Get In With A Builder?
I have subs calling daily looking for work right now and I've told them all to send me their info and I'll call them when I have need as I'm happy with my normal subs.
Some of those subs have taken it a step further however and have gone out to some of my new homes and taken a look at the plans and walked the house. I've been there a couple times and I see some stranger out there taking measurements and I've asked if I can help them. Normally I'm annoyed because I don't like people coming on the job uninvited, what if they fell and got hurt or something, but then they say "I'm just getting numbers to send you an estimate". Many of these guys have afterward sent me an impressive estimate that is professionally done and at a good price which has caused me to give them a small job to test them out. My current main HVAC guys came to me this way as well as my overhead door sub and insulator. I was happy with the ones I was using but I'm happier with these ones and I probably wouldn't have given them a chance had they not taken it into their own hands. This tactic only works for trades that need no explanation of details beyond what's on the plans and you have to be able to just walk on the job, like a new home or small subdivision. Try it on a remodel and you might be running in a serpentine motion out the door .Someone mentioned that you've been surviving off less than going rate since you were subbing for a sub. Don't raise your prices if you don't need to right now and it will help you win some work. If you don't already have one, see about getting a line of credit on your home or a credit card just in case the bills pile up faster than the work. This is for worst case situations, but better than folding. The point is to survive because this slowdown won't last too long. Good luck, Wack
