Adding A License Classification
I am a General Contractor "B" and will be obtaining a C33 Painting classification. I would like some input or opinions on weather it might be best to create a separate company exclusively for painting jobs or do it all under my current general contracting company. Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Re: Adding A License Classification
Wow your county/state/municipality requires licensing for painting? I've never heard of alicensed painter before.
What are the pros and cons? Let's discuss... Can you multi classify your WC? Carpenters isnurance, which you probably have since you are a GC, is a higher rate than painters. If you can't multi classify you will probably be paying a higher rate for your painting jobs thus throwing your money away. Do you want to be specialists? If so you may want to setup a seperate company, or not necessarily a company. You can be DBA, I can add names to my corporation withotu actually making another corporation. Come up with a new name, a new logo, new phone number and go into business. Specifically what do you think might be a benefit to you starting a new company, and specifically what do you think might be a negative to this new venture of yours? |

Re: Adding A License ClassificationQuote:
In Florida all Division 1 licenses include the specialties such as painting. If not licensed as a Division 1 contractor a painter would need a painters license, which is a county license. |

Re: Adding A License Classification
We can paint as General Contractor. But we cannot advertise as painters or for painting jobs exclusively which is what I am trying to do. I am looking to try to capture some of that business.

Re: Adding A License Classification
Thanks Grumpy, I will check with my acc about adding DBA's to my existing corporation to see if can do in CA. Good idea.
Not looking to specialize. But I have employees that are good painters in my crews. We do TI's and I have guys that cover multiple trades. So I am looking to advertise for painting jobs in addition to my advertising as a GC. Just looking for ways to capture additional business. |

Re: Adding A License Classification
I am a General Contractor (B) as well, and I just got my C-10 classification a few weeks ago. I just remember from the forms that your business name has to "jive" with the new classification. I.E. you cant be "Joe's Roofing" and have the Painting & Wall covering classification go with that. Also, I am pretty sure that you can't have a separate company under the same license, even if it is a different classification.
