About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This?
I am wondering how many people actually read the "About Us" section of websites. I rarely even click on them, unless I did not find what I was looking for in the rest of the site.
Taking the question further, people who read them voluntarily, are they conciensious shoppers, or obsessive consumers? Are they reading because they are in pursuit of a great contractor, and really care about the years of experience working with Dad etc, or are they just starting the process of scrutinizing everything they can possibly think of? The reason I ask, is that I am trying to word my "About Us", so that I can spell out who we are, and how we operate. I want to use this section to help me in qualifying potential customers. I want to spell out the importance of good relationships with our clients based on trust, not based on price, and competitive bids. I would like to require them to read it, or a mailed version of it. Let them see that if they are looking for a long term relationship with someone they can trust, have us over, and if they are looking for price only, don't waste our time. Like I said, I'm mostly wondering if they will ever even see the section. |

Re: About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This?
at the suggestion of my marketing consultant we titled that page "about you". Feel free to check out my site.
I dont know who reads what and why but to date I still cant see any viable way to pre qualify and sort out tire kickers from buyers. I really dont think anyone knows who the buyer is so I figure you must give all leads thier due.

Re: About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This? YIKES!!!!Vinny, I think I would loose this part for sure ......"Everything about this website, about Roccie's Asphalt Paving, is geared toward making you part of the happy 52% of home owners who would hire this contractor again." Call me crazy, but that's not a good record for me to look at if I were looking to hire a company.

Re: About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This?
I click on it sometimes. But the problem I see all to often is that people use it to spout generic mission statements and customer service drivel. Rarely do I see the name of the person who runs the company, or when it was founded or, frankly, any insight into the company or the people behind it.
If you check out Stone Mountain's site (a member here), there is a nice little anecdote about how he and his brother started the company. It lays out a nice history in a few lines and conjures up a nice image of the guy behind the company, (that image of course, will be completely destroyed when you actually meet Steve )

Re: About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This?
I'm by no means a web guru, but my weekly stats tell me we had 326 of the 2300 pages called (from 650 unique folks visiting our site last week) look at the "about us" section, making it #3 (Portfolio is #1).

Re: About Us.....Do Customers Really Read This?
I look at the 'about us' page on most of the sites that I check out. It's a precursor to what you can expect from the company . Sure, most of it is garbage, but occasionally, you find someone (or their marketing co) that has really put a lot of thought into how they want to project themselves.
