Question

About Permits In Nw Indiana

Does anybody know if I indiana issues certification for contractors? When I started my remodeling business not to long ago, I made some research and found that indiana does not requiere a contractor to be certified to do business in the state ( except plumbers and electricians.) I think there should be some sort of certification out there for people that is involved in the construction trade in this state. Does anybody have any information about this topic? I have not run into any legal problems yet in order to do a job, but still i woul like to comply with any local laws before anything bad happens.

I'd take a trip down to City Hall, hearsay means nothing in court.

Certain citys are the only ones that I have found to require a contractors license...

Indianapolis, 350.oo or so, i believe its good for 2 years.

Evansville, actually has a test and real requirements.

Re: About Permits In Nw Indiana

The State of Indiana has given jurisdiction for licensing requirements to the individual counties that make up the state. However there is a state wide plumbing and hvac qualification that must be met by trade certification. Nonetheless, a contractor must go to the county of the place he is working to ask whether there is a contractor requirement or license. Some counties do not have a license nor a license requirement. Also, some cities have a license requirement. This generally means that the county gave the jurisdiction to the city (or town) to oversee licensing requirements and or licensing of contractors.

So here's something for you:

Hancock County- no license requirement, no lincense = open season all year round.

Marion County-City of Indianapolis-license requirement= insurance, bond, fees=contractor card, yes 2 yrs from the 1st of this month.

City of Lawrence (inside marion county)= license requirement =insurance, bond, fees, city of Indianapolis card =contractor card.
(sometimes have to go and pay at both places to get a permit)

Hamiton County = no license requirement.
Town of Fishers= will give you a license no. but no card and no standards for getting permits execpt paying fees and getting inspections.
City of Carmel=no license requirement, anyone can get a permit

Is that helpful??? Check the city and county for jurisdiction you may also have to register a business with the state in order to obtain a license if one is necessary. (Keeping in mind that this will allow a check to ensure no other business is operating with the same name)
