25% Out Of Business

The new phone books came out & I always compare the last book to the new one. I like to see who has decided to advertise more, advertise less, out-of-business & new players.

This year was pretty shocking. There are 25% fewer phone numbers listed, some who had sizable display ads. I know it's tough out there but I wasn't expecting a 25% drop.

Re: 25% Out Of Business

I think part of it is just a trend of not using the yellow pages as much. More and more people are using the internet to find what they want and the yellow pages just aren't cutting it anymore.

Re: 25% Out Of Business

I agree that not having a display ad doesn't mean they're out of business, but there are phone number listing in the columns. 25% no longer have a listed phone number. These are the free listings. IMO they're out of business.

Yellow pages priced themselves out of the market.

I haven't used the Yellow Pages in years. I get them dropped off at the door and I just throw them away. I wouldn't advertise there.

yeah...yellow pages suck...just because a business doesn't have the automatically free listing that they have had for the past 5 yrs doesn't mean that they are out of business...maybe they are just boycotting potential customers....

Re: 25% Out Of Business

I don't even have a white pages listing. My cell number is on my cards, and that is it. My home phone exists only because it is required to have internet, since we are on a co-op here.

Maybe they're switching to cell phones to get some peace from those nuisance profitable customers.

I would agree...they are likely out of business from the info you have provided.

Loosing your known phone number is like placing your tools in a pawn shop.

Re: 25% Out Of Business

Out of bisiness? What do you do after you go out of bisiness ? Ive had 20 men working on 5 or 6 jobs for years at a time . The past 2 years ive had only three guys . Now im down to 2 ( one guy quit) This winter is looking kinda grim. i have about 120,000 dollers worth of work that should last from Jan till Mar . I could go down to 1 man but I just dont know how i could just list my tool , trucks , trailer hoe& loader on Ebay and pack it in . What do you do next ? walmart ,quick check , minie mart , doctor , hobo beach bum , wine-o . I mite be OOB and i dont know it yet. Ive got to go see a crummy deck job now , I hope the guy has some money .

Unless things are different where you are, without a landline business phone number you won't be listed in they business section of the yellow pages as a default free listing.

But regardless,

Paper yellow pages just won't die. They keep hanging on like cancer. About as relevant in our future as pay phones are. However they still have a market share and it's big enough to keep them going. It was just a few years ago when our local company sold off their yellow page business for about 5 BILLION dollars! That's a big number still.

But they are making the move to the Internet which is what they should have done long ago.

if i am in business, and have a landline with a number, why would i want to get rid of that number and just use a cell phone?

ergo, if a company has a business number, and a listing, last year (and however many years before) and this year they don't....well, they are either out of business, or on their way....

No landline number in a company name can really screw with your paydex and your business credit in general.
