Zinc Strip

Does anyone still use zinc strip?I find it to be useless, you'd need it every 4 or 5 courses for full effect. If the home owner asks for it I try to change their mind to an algae resistant shingle. We used to use Tide laundry soap poured along the ridgecap and let the rain do the rest. That was with the old organic shingles, does anyone know if this method is effective on fiberglass?

Re: Zinc Strip

Unless it's a long-ass rake, I've found zinc strips @ the ridge are very effective around here. AR shingles are not sold here because they are useless against our algae. It's different from what you have back east.

Just spread a bunch of hot-dip hand drives all over the roof, it'll get the same result. lol

Re: Zinc Strip

B.C is Western Canada, the western most province(besides the point). Not all shingles are AR you pay a couple extra bucks a bundle. The zinc strips i've seen applied out here are only effective for the first 3-4 ft.I know a good wide galvanized ridgecap works very well(but very ugly).Does anyone have any other tricks or tecniques they use to prevent moss(algae)?

Re: Zinc Strip

my bad, sorry, no...

We have about the same problems with it here as you do, but it's only occasionally an issue that comes up. I've gone back on jobs I've put zinc strips on years ago and the roofs are actually pretty clean so I assume it's doing it's job. They say it will last 20yrs but I seriously doubt that.
