What Is This Underlayment?

framing in a hip roof for an addition. to tie in had to remove clay barrel
tile from the existing roof.
underlayment is from a roll, 32" before overlap, granulated surface, looks like hot tar at overlap, 3/16 inch thick.
thought it might be granulated peel n stick, but at the drip edge can sort of pry it up pretty easy.
anyway...the questions.

what do you think it is
looks in good shape - so is the entire application with quality material.
some of the tiles were stuck to the tar area at the overlap and in removal small portions of the top granulated layer were damaged or removed. can these be repaired.
thanks for the time

YEs they can be repaired. Probably 90# roll roofing or SBS modified bitumen.

Tile roofs need a heavy duty underlayment. now a days we ice shield the whole roof under them.

Re: What Is This Underlayment?

so, if these small repairs can be made would it be advisable to replace with more modern product - or just waste of $
and what would the repair process by - roof cement?

Re: What Is This Underlayment?

Please for the sake of humanity, dont use roof cement on a tile roof. many times you can replace broken tile and redo the flashing work and thats fine. other times you have to take all the tile off stock pile them ice shield the roof then put the same tiles back with new copper slaters nails and new flashing work"rip&relay". its not worth it if its concrete tile though only clay.
a good slate and tile man can do repairs and you can never tell.

If you use the plastic roof cement to repair the underlayment, please cover it with a piece of 30# so the next guy can get the tile off later.
